The Berlin trade fair company Messe Berlin is the first to provide its exhibitors with a certificate confirming its environmental friendliness. Experts produced a report that revealed the fair's energy consumption, energy sources and CO2 emissions from 2005 to 2009.
Rigorous energy management and selective investments during this period enabled the amount of fuel used for heating and cooling to be reduced by 19.7%, accompanied by a 14.7% cut in CO2 emissions. Messe Berlin met over 30% of its electricity requirements by using the environmentally friendly combined heat and power system.
“In view of the growing demand for a more ecological approach in the staging of our events we want to be able to produce objective, easily understandable and tested figures to convince our exhibitors that Berlin is the right venue for trade fairs from an ecological standpoint too”, explains Raimund Hosch, ceo of Messe Berlin.
The document contains quantified details about the environmental qualities of this trade fair, which is again expecting some 35,000 exhibiting companies and around 2.5 million visitors this year.
