For more than 70 years, American Craft magazine has told artists’ rich stories, and now for the first time, it’s released a free digital-edition entitled The Craft of Design.
The issue features 25 designer-makers and expertly designed, well-crafted objects. According to editor Andrew Zoellner, the focus of the issue is “design with a handmade twist.”

On the Cover: Mat Driscoll’s Water Tower chair, made, aptly enough, of reclaimed redwood from an old water tower. Driscoll is the founder of Bellboy, a collaborative woodshop in Brooklyn, New York.
Ellipse Incalmo Bottles: At Vitreluxe glass studio in Portland, Oregon, Lynn Everett Read blends midcentury design with a modern sensibility. Case in point: his 2010 Ellipse Incalmo series, in apricot/topaz, steel/gray, and tea/purple.
Low Rider Lounge: New Hampshire-based Vivian Beer’s Low Rider Lounge (2013) is handcrafted of steel and stucco cement, measuring 34.5 inches tall. Wexler Gallery is showing it at the Collective Design Fair in New York, May 8 –11.
Finny Stools: Scott McGlasson’s Woodsport is an independent woodcraft studio based in St. Paul, Minnesota. The designer’s 2-ft-tall 2011 Finny stools are made of walnut, ash, and cherry covered with Icelandic lamb pelts.
Lost & Found Mug Set: Helena, Montana-based Andrew Gilliatt uses molds to cast his uniquely shaped porcelain tableware, including this 2012 Lost & Found mug set. He decorates his sleek forms with custom decals.
Published since 1941 by the American Craft Council, the magazine celebrates the age-old human impulse to make things—and inspires readers to craft a conscientious, expressive, and authentic life.
