Beginning February 2010, 18 homeless families will move into a comfortable space they can call home, thanks to interior designer Vanessa De Vargas and a group of prominent Los Angeles-based designers including Erica Islas, Kelly LaPlante, Bridgid Coulter, Nicole Sassaman, Cory Pernicano, Linda Graveline, Jessica Brende, Nadia Geller, Rachel Winokur, Carlo Rios, Cozette Coffman, Christy Biberich, Elizabeth Bomberger, Typhanie Peterson, Rhonda Angell, Melissa Capehart and Lynnea Schwieters.
Each designer was responsible for the design and decoration of one unit. The designers secured donations from home furnishings manufacturers and retailers including Zia-Priven, Waterworks, Benjamin Moore, Duralee Fabrics, Empiric Studio, The Woven Company, Ferm Living, Mjh Decorative Arts, Papermosiac Studio, Lana Kole Studio, M.B. + Assoc. and Ero Chic Living.
Upward Bound House's goal is to eliminate homelessness among families with children in Los Angeles by providing housing, supportive services and advocacy. Since 1997, more than 1,100 individuals – including over 650 children – have graduated from Upward Bound House and are no longer homeless. The agency boasts a 95% success rate of families securing and retaining permanent housing.
The opening event for the new shelter will take place January 29th, 2010 at the Shelter starting at 1:00 pm located at 12841 West Washington Blvd, Culver City, CA 90066. Designers will be on hand to showcase the units that they designed and decorated.
