For many designers, launching a product line is an exciting proposition—but they have no idea how to pivot from their project work. Beyond developing a beautiful product, success entails identifying opportunities in the market, building the right operational foundation and creating offerings that feel like a natural extension of your firm’s design philosophy.

In this Launch class, Molly Sedlacek, founder and creative director of Orca, shares how she transformed a landscape design practice into a multifaceted business incorporating product development along with design services, procurement and construction,  ecommerce and education. Drawing on six years of experience, she’ll offer a behind-the-scenes look at how Orca identified untapped opportunities, developed products rooted in its core aesthetic and established a roadmap for sustainable growth. Attendees will gain practical insights into balancing client work with product development, defining roles and responsibilities, and building a product business that serves to strengthen—not distract from—their design practice.

In this class, attendees will learn:
- How to identify market opportunities that align with your firm’s design philosophy and expertise
- The key roles, responsibilities and processes involved in developing and launching a product line
- Strategies for balancing design services with product development as the business grows
- How to build a product road map while staying true to your brand’s core aesthetic

After this class, attendees will have:
- A framework for identifying product opportunities that complement your existing business
- A road map for evaluating and developing product ideas
- Organizational tools for planning product development alongside client work
- Greater confidence in taking the first steps toward building a product business

Molly Sedlacek is the founder and creative director of Orca, a landscape design and product studio with locations in Los Angeles and the Bay Area. Guided by a mission to reconnect people to the earth through natural materials and plants, Orca has grown from a landscape design practice into a multifaceted business spanning design services, product development and materials sourcing. With a background in textiles and more than a decade in the organic home industry, Sedlacek brings a distinctly raw, elemental perspective to landscape design. Since founding the studio, she has led the design of hundreds of residential and commercial gardens while expanding Orca’s offerings to include California clay pavers, living-finish hardware and plumbing fixtures, and assorted thoughtful products that encourage a life lived without walls.
