The industry is navigating a moment unlike any that has come before. Tariffs are reshaping supply chains overnight, the housing market is tightening project pipelines, and designers are asking themselves an important question: “How do I stay essential, sane and satisfied, doing work I’m proud of?”

This Earth Day, materials researcher August Rust and sustainable strategist and Heirloom co-founder Maha Mamish offer a surprising answer—one that’s less about adding more to your plate but has everything to do with building a practice made to last.

A practical sustainability mindset isn’t just good ethics; it’s one of the most effective business strategies available to designers today. Perfection is not the point: This session focuses on progress and differentiation. Rust will introduce a curated, cost-neutral materials tool kit featuring domestic, scientifically vetted products that address today’s sourcing challenges rather than creating new ones. Mamish will explore how leaning into circularity, craftsmanship and the deeply human desire for a home with a story can position your firm in a niche no algorithm can replicate—and that a growing segment of clients is actively seeking.

In this class, you will learn how to:
- Source healthier, more sustainable materials without significant cost increases, and where to find trusted resources to start your kit
- Position your sustainable practice as a value proposition to clients, without the gloom and doom
- Identify your sustainability niche and articulate what makes your design practice uniquely yours amid today’s supply chain challenges and growing demand for longevity
- Build a specific, values-rooted referral network that sustains your business for the long term

By the end of class, you will have:
- A starter framework for expanding your sustainable materials kit with time- and quality-tested alternatives
- Language and framing to talk about sustainability with clients in a way that feels natural, not preachy, and is centered on health, wellness and the story of their home
- A networking strategy structured around your unique sustainability niche that generates long-term referrals
- A personal action plan rooted in what you’re already good at and where your greatest differentiation lies
