What is the inspiration behind the new collection?
The Skye collection draws inspiration from natural elements and sculptural forms, such as Neolithic standing stones and the works of modern British artists like Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore. These influences are reflected in the intricate interplay of geometric shapes and the organic, cloudlike forms that define the series.
What was the starting point for this collection?
The starting point for Skye was a desire to explore and celebrate the unique qualities of metal. I wanted to create something both sculptural and functional that celebrated the doctrine of “truth to materials,” which is about emphasizing the honest and transparent use of materials, showing their natural characteristics—in this case, expressing the inherent properties of steel and highlighting its strength and versatility. The collection began to crystallize with the idea of an ellipse held within an amorphous form, and the aim of capturing the beauty and subtle elegance of natural and geometric shapes.
What piece are you most excited to unveil?
I am particularly excited about the special edition Skye console. This piece features a patinated finish within the central ellipse, with the original welds still visible, giving it a distinctive and authentic look. It truly embodies the sculptural and functional aspects of the collection.
How do you feel this collection pushes the brand forward?
Skye showcases our ability to create pieces that are both visually striking and functionally versatile. It’s the boldest collection I’ve designed so far. Aesthetically, because it features such simple and strong shapes, I wanted the pieces to feel somehow monumental. And like many simple-looking things, they are actually extremely challenging to make: It’s the unparalleled skill and experience of my workshop that made it possible. This collection pushes the brand forward by blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design. The emphasis on sculptural forms and the innovative use of materials demonstrate our commitment to pushing the boundaries.
How does the collection build on or complement your other offerings?
Skye introduces a new form and finish that seamlessly blend with previous designs. We strive to be bold and distinctive in everything we do—and Skye is another very strong shape, with a striking silhouette. It is completely different from anything we have made before, yet it’s also similar in that it draws on the same shared design language. It follows in the footsteps of our other signature pieces and sits alongside the organic shapes of the Cloud collection, the bold geometry of Ava, and the classical simplicity of Capricorn. This cohesion ensures that our pieces can be integrated into a variety of interior spaces.
What about the collection feels fresh and exciting?
The exploration of shapes and materials. With the use of satin-polished sheet steel and the introduction of patinated finishes, we bring a new level of visual interest and innovation to our products.
Tell us more about the materials in this collection. Are there certain materials used throughout, and/or a material that is a highlight on a particular piece?
The Skye collection primarily uses sheet steel, which allows us to create thin, strong sections with a beautiful satin finish. Alternately, the Cloud coffee table features a marble top set into delicately forged bronze or steel legs. This combination highlights the craftsmanship and versatility that define the collection, showcasing our commitment to using high-quality materials in innovative ways
How do you envision designers using this collection?
I imagine designers using this collection as statement pieces in a variety of settings, as either entrance tables or dining tables. The sculptural forms and elegant lines make them ideal for both contemporary and traditional interiors. And because the Skye series is made of stainless steel, it can go outside: I can envision it looking very sculptural within a landscape, like the standing stones that inspired it!
Can the collection be customized? What kind of options are possible?
Yes, the collection offers a variety of customization options. Initially, I wanted to make the whole collection out of stainless steel, meaning it would be suitable to go outside, but we will be offering it in other materials, like bronze, and in all our other finishes. Everything we produce is made-to-order, so we can tailor pieces to specific sizes and colors.
