La Cienega Design Quarter’s ‘Legends’ kicks off next week

For three days, May 8-10, stars of design, fashion, architecture and art will descend upon La Cienega Design Quarter (LCDQ) for the fifth-annual LEGENDS of La Cienega, which is themed Time Capsule: The Past, Present and Future of Design.

Windows of the 44 participating design shops and galleries that line the streets of the LCDQ will be imaginatively transformed by some of the nation’s most creative designers to reflect the Time Capsule theme.

Throughout the three days of events, consumers and designers are invited to enjoy keynote presentations, panel discussions, cocktail parties, book signings and much more. Here’s a list of highlights and happenings that punctuate this year’s event:

Wednesday, May 8

Legends kicks off with the annual opening night gala. This is a private event and is by invitation only.

Thursday, May 9

From 8:30 – 10:00 a.m., meet social media ambassadors for Legends 2013 at the Blogger Breakfast and Discussion: Megan Arquette of Beach Bungalow 8 and The Skirted Roundtable, Kelly Lee of Kelly Golightly, and Alissa Swedlow of The Goods Design are the bloggers representing LCDQ. Find out what they want in their blogs, how blogs work and all you need to know about social media.

Immediately following breakfast, from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m., Merida’s CEO Catherine Connolly will lead a discussion about the “Art of Customization” and its value in today’s design world with designers Tim Campbell and Malcom James Kutner. (Merida VIP/Blogger Lounge, 765 N. La Cienega)

Newell Turner

The first keynote presentation will take place from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. at Therien (716 N. La Cienega). House Beautiful editor-in-chief Newell Turner will present a conversation with interior designer and author Carey Maloney on bringing the design book into the information age. STUFF: The M (Group) Interactive Guide to Collecting, Decorating with, and Learning about Beautiful and Unusual Things transports readers into cyberspace using digital recognition software linking the reader to over 500 curated topic links.

From 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Soli Architectural Surfaces (8483 Melrose) will present “Doing the Wright Thing: Preserving the Architect’s 4 Textile Block Homes in LA. Frank Lloyd Wright’s visionary influence on architecture is reflected in the facades of 4 textile block homes in Los Angeles (Ennis, Freeman, Storer and Millard).

Architects Steven Ehrlich and Franco Vecchio, along with Jeffrey Herr, Curator at Hollyhock House, will discuss the value in and methods of preserving these houses, where Wright elevated the ordinary concrete wall to art by creating ornamental, almost brocade-like patterns in the concrete.

Pamela Jaccarino

Another keynote presentation will take place from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at George Smith (804 N. La Cienega) featuring Pamela Jaccarino, editor-in-chief of Luxe Interiors + Design. Panelists Phillip Gorrivan, Mark D. Sikes, Ron Woodson and Jaime Rummerfield will discuss how and why legendary designers of the past have influenced them and today’s other top design talents.

From 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. editor-in-chief of Traditional Home, Ann Maine, will present the keynote “Integrity vs. Ingenuity: Buy New or Buy Vintage?” Thom Filicia, Oliver M. Furth and Molly Luetkemeyer will discuss the pros and cons of designing with authentic antiques versus inspired reproductions—and how availability, accessibility, cost and integrity of design affect the decision. Meet American design icon C.Z. Guest through the eyes of Susana Salk from 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. at Downtown (719  N. La Cienega). Salk will travels from Connecticut to present the book that Vogue, Vanity Fair and other magazines are raving about, C.Z. Guest: American Style Icon. Though she was a grand dame of high society, Guest was modern and considered a night out dancing at Studio 54 or partying at Andy Warhol’s factory as important as a black-tie ball. She had such an influence on society, fashion and interiors over five decades that Time magazine put her on the cover in 1962.

Another keynote will take place at Woven Accents (8674 Melrose) from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. A panel including Cliff Fong, Peter Fetterman and Richard Shapiro will join Anthony Barzilay Freund, editor of 1stdibs' Introspective Magazine, to explore the exciting nexus of art and design.

From 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. meet the latest group of design authors at Hollyhock (927 N. La Cienga) New York designers David Scott (Outside the Box: An Interior Designer's Innovative Approach) Alex Papachristidis (The Age of Elegance) and Carey Maloney (STUFF: Interactive Guide to Collecting, Decorating With, and Learning About, Wonderful and Unusual Things) and Connecticut designer Florence de Dampierre (Walls and French Chic: The Art of Decorating Houses) will introduce and sign their design books, while photographer Tim Street-Porter (Doris Duke's Shangri-La: A House in Paradise), designer and design author Annie Kelly (Rooms to Inspire by the Sea) and Texas architect Michael Imber (Ranches, Villas, and Houses) also will be on hand to chat and sign their volumes at Mecox (919 N. La Cienga).

Crans Baldwin

From 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. Crans Baldwin, CEO of Edward Ferrell + Lewis Mittman, will present “The Interior Design Industry in 2013 – Now What?” Baldwin has spoken to thousands of designers across the U.S. In his talks he shares insights and forecasts future opportunities for the design industry. In a presentation sponsored by Angeleno magazine and Interiors California, Baldwin will share 10 ideas that can help you grow your business; Aging in Place, the next big thing; and Education Before Decoration, among other topics. Q&A and reception to follow at Egg & Dart Home (525 N. La Cienega).

The final keynote of the day will take place from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. at the Rug Company (8202 Melrose). Mayer Rus, West Coast editor of Architectural Digest, will explore the challenges for designers extending into neighboring markets without diluting their brand's integrity or creative vision, along with panelists Chris Barett, Natasha Baradaran, Jay Jeffers and Christopher Sharp.

Finish off the day with cocktails and a book signing from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. at Dragonette Ltd. (711 N. La Cienega). Jeryl Brunner, author of My City, My Los Angeles: Famous People Share Their Favorite Places. Brunner, a journalist whose work has appeared in O, the Oprah Magazine, and InStyle, has interviewed hundreds of celebrities, including Madonna and George Clooney, will be featured.

Friday, May 10

Michael Boodro

Friday’s events start off with a keynote presentation given by Michael Boodro, editor-in-chief of Elle Décor, at Dragonette Ltd. (711 N. La Cienega) from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. Panelists Kim Alexandriuk, Timothy Corrigan, Alex Papachristidis, Madeline Stuart will discuss why certain periods come into (and go out of) style repeatedly—and what’s next on the horizon. A book signing will follow.

From 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Gina Berschneider, Inc. (847 N. La Cienega) along with the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers and California Homes magazine, will present a vibrant panel discussion on recreating upholstery from earlier eras. Special guest panelists to be announced and it will be moderated by Susan McFadden, editor-in-chief of California Homes.

Another keynote, from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., will take place at the Jean de Merry space (8417 Melrose). Peter Sallick, co-founder of Dering Hall and CEO of Waterworks, will share insights about the business of expanding beyond private clients, and speaking to the fast-growing and ever-evolving audience of savvy trade and consumer shoppers through a new breed of retail and online experiences. Panelist include Jane Hallworth, Tim Clarke and James Huniford.

David Wiseman

“The New Luxury” keynote will be presented at Szalon (910 N. La Cienega) from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. featuring Samantha Brooks, senior contributing editor for Robb Report Home & Style. Panelists Joan Behnke, Grant Kirkpatrick and David Wiseman will discuss how high-end design has changed since the recession and where it’s headed.

Tufenkian Artisan Carpets (501 N. La Cienega) will host the keynote “Go West Young Man” from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. The discussion will be moderated by Erin Feher, editor-in-chief of California Home + Design who sits down with three of LA's most prominent designers to discuss the impact of the gay community on design and one of its major epicenters. Panelists include Jamie Bush, Trip Haenisch and James Radin.

Kelly Wearstler will sign her latest book Rhapsody, and previews her new collection of wall coverings, fabrics and trimmings with Groundworks—in her showroom (8440 Melrose) from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m.

From 4:30 – 6:00 p.m., Baker Furniture (360 N. La Cienega) hosts Turner, editor-in-chief of House Beautiful along with panelists Jon Call, Tyler Dawson and Catherine Kwong to discuss “The Next Wave: Brand Building via Digital and Social Media.”

Nathan Turner

Nathan Turner will be in the Mecox Showroom (919 N. La Cienega) from 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. for a book signing. Guests will see an example of a Turner-set table and meet the author of Nathan Turner’s American Style: Classic Design and Effortless Entertaining as Mecox hosts a tapas and margarita reception for the designer to celebrate his first book.

The tables will be turned on Ronda Carman as she treks all the way from her home in Scotland to L.A. to launch her book Designers at Home: Personal Reflections on Stylish Living. Carman, who is accustomed to doing the interviewing, will be joined by Martyn Lawrence Bullard, whose home is in the book, in an interview with Mat Sanders, editorial director of the soon-to-be-launched website DomaineHome.com. Followed by signature “Help Me Ronda” cocktails. The event will take place from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. in the Harbinger Showroom (752 N. La Cienega).

Legends media partners include Elle Decor, House Beautiful, Traditional Home, Luxe Interiors + Design and Veranda, along with 1stdibs, Coldwell Banker Previews International, Dering Hall, Merida and One Kings Lane.

Legends VIP passes are on sale here. Proceeds from the sale of the VIP passes go to Habitat for Humanity. Last year about $40,000 was raised for Habitat for Humanity from the sale of the VIP passes and the post-Legends One Kings Lane sale.
