What will you be doing Saturday, May 31? If you’re an interior designer, you’re in luck. The International Federation of Architects/Designers (IFI) has hailed that special day World Interiors Day.

This year’s theme is “Design Matters,” which will work to promote the role design serves as a medium for positive change, how it affects people’s quality of life, and how it promotes creativity and innovation.

Last year, events took place from New York to Atlanta to Hawaii, and even overseas in Amsterdam. In New York City, more than 200 events were held in different venues throughout the entire month of May as part of the inaugural NYCxDESIGN. Organizations including the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) and the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) got on board, hosting walking tours and open houses of private interiors and office spaces, all while interior architects and designers gave lectures at schools, public libraries and other institutions.

This year, there are several ways in which individual designers can participate in World Interiors Day. Depending on the personal or geographical situation, designers and architects may organize an event themselves or participate with colleagues in a larger event. Suitable events may include open door programs, open design practices, exhibitions and art events, lectures, talks, discussions and children’s activities.

Individual designers may work together with local and/or national organizations to link small-scale activities together to form a citywide, province-wide, statewide or countrywide event. All events are to be aimed at the general public, with the intention that the event accumulate publicity, gain momentum and grow its reputation from year to year.

The IFI is interested to know how designers plan to celebrate the day around the world. Send in your firm’s plans and pictures to secretary@ifiworld.org.
