ASID adds dynamic group to Board of Directors

The American Society of Interior Designers’ (ASID) new 11-member volunteer Board of Directors assumed office on October 1 and includes three officers (president, president-elect and past president); seven at-large directors, and one Industry Partner representative.

Incoming President Rachelle Schoessler Lynn is joined by four new at-large board members: Duval B. Acker, ASID; AnnMarie Jackson, ASID; Patrick Schmidt, ASID; and Kia Witherspoon, Allied ASID. Kay Sargent, ASID, is the new Industry Partner representative. Sargent and the incoming at-large members will serve two-year terms. President-elect Stephanie Clemons, FASID, will succeed Schoessler Lynn as president in 2015.

“I am honored to serve with this remarkable group—interior design leaders with vast and diverse experience who are deeply committed to ASID and its members,” said Schoessler Lynn. “We are anticipating a highly productive and effective year. Laser-focused on pursuing the goals of our strategic plan, we are investing in research, evidence-based programming, and building relationships with our industry partners. Equally important, we are placing a priority on helping members compete in a global marketplace and furthering the discussion about interior design’s impact on the human experience.”

Here’s more about each of the 2014 Board of Directors:

President: Schoessler Lynn, FASID, CID, LEED AP BD+C, is a senior associate with Meyer, Scherer & Rockcastle in Minneapolis and serves as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Minnesota. A nationally recognized expert and frequent lecturer on sustainable design and workplace issues, Schoessler Lynn has received numerous professional accolades, including ASID Minnesota Designer of Distinction and one of “40 under 40” from theMinneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal.

President-Elect: Clemons, Ph.D., FASID, FIDEC, is dedicated to furthering the next generation of interior design professionals through education and research. She is a full professor at Colorado State University where she recently served as the acting associate dean for the College of Health and Human Sciences. A Fulbright Senior Specialist for the United States, Clemons has served as chair of the ASID Education Training Advisory Council (ETAC).

Past President: Barbara Marini, FASID, IDEC, is principal of Marini Interiors Inc., the commercial interior design firm she established in Grosse Pointe Park, Mich., in 1987. Both a practitioner and educator, Marini has taught interior design at the College for Creative Studies and Eastern Michigan University for more than 15 years; served as interior design program chair at the International Academy of Design and Technology in Troy, Mich.; and successfully led the CIDA accreditation.

Directors-at-Large:

Duval B. Acker, ASID, CMKD, founder and principal of Kitchens by Design in Charleston, S.C., has been providing clients with residential kitchen and bathroom solutions for more than three decades. An active leader and past president of the ASID Carolinas chapter, Acker has also volunteered her expertise nationally, serving as an ASID spokesperson on kitchen and bath design, and participating on the ASID Ethics Committee and the Legislative and Codes Advisory Council.

Steffany Hollingsworth, ASID, NMLID, principal of HVL Interiors in Santa Fe, N.M., has dedicated her time and expertise to ASID in local and national roles. She was a member and chair of the ASID Student Advisory Council and participated on the National Nominating Committee and Chapter Support Team, as well as serving a term as New Mexico chapter president.

Barbara J. Huelat, FASID, EDAC, AAHID, is a noted expert in evidence-based healthcare design. The author of Healing Environments: Design for the Body, Mind & Spirit, she is a founding board member of the Symposium on Healthcare Design, as well as the American Academy of Healthcare Interior Designers.

AnnMarie Jackson, ASID, AAHID, is director of interior design at the Montgomery, Ala.-based Sherlock, Smith and Adams. A recognized leader in healthcare design, her work is inspired by the ability of interior environments to positively affect the human experience. Jackson is a former board member and president of the ASID Wisconsin chapter, and nationally she has served in many capacities, including as an ASID spokesperson on healthcare design and a frequent speaker at ASID student events.

Schmidt, ASID, NCIDQ, RID, is a senior designer at J. Baker Interiors LLC, a small residential and hospitality design firm in Carmel, Ind. For more than two decades, Schmidt has been an invaluable resource to the ASID Indiana Chapter, volunteering his time in numerous positions, including president, and he has also participated on national task forces and committees.

Laura McDonald Stewart, ASID, LEED AP, operates PLiNTH & CHiNTZ, a hip online magazine that prepares a new generation of designers to enter the workforce and educates the public about the interior design industry. Stewart also manages METROCON Expo & Conference for the ASID Texas Chapter and has served as the chapter’s president.

Weatherspoon, Allied ASID, a dancer turned soldier who fell in love with interior design, is principal designer at DETERMINED by DESIGN, a Washington, D.C.-based firm specializing in multi-family and hospitality markets. She served nationally on the ASID Emerging Professionals Advisory Council.

Industry Partner Representative: Sargent, ASID, IIDA, CID, LEED AP ID+C, is vice president of Architecture, Design and Workplace Strategies at Teknion. Dedicated to elevating the standing of interior designers in the business community, Sargent founded the Design Leadership Council in Washington, D.C. She has served on the international boards of IIDA, NCQLP and NCIDQ, and she lectures regularly at international conferences and at the university level.

The board of directors governs ASID, meeting quarterly to provide strategic direction on the industry and profession, set policy and act on behalf of the overall membership.

The following Board members are completing their terms on the 2013 Board of Directors: Vincent Carter, FASID; Matthew DeGeeter, ASID; Joan Kauffman, ASID; Sonya Odell, FASID; Industry Partner Representative Jen Bruno; and Lisa Henry, FASID, who served as 2011–2012 president.
