On Thursday, September 18, during the New York Design Center’s annual What’s New, What’s Next event, Business of Home moderated an insightful conversation about the economic challenges reshaping the design industry. Led by The Business of Home Podcast host Dennis Scully and BOH executive editor Fred Nicolaus, “Designing Through Disruptions” focused on tariffs, inflation and the rising cost of doing business—topics top of mind for designers navigating today’s marketplace. On hand to delve into the issues were designers Alexa Hampton and Nick Olsen and attorney Seth Kaplowitz—a power trio of panelists who offered perspectives on how these pressures affect vendors, client relationships and the bottom line.
“At such a transformative moment in the industry, few things are more valuable than strategic insights from seasoned vets,” said Scully. “Alexa and Nick shared their personal experiences of adapting to change, while Seth provided a concise overview of legal issues that might not otherwise have occurred to designers. Together, they offered an essential combination of opinions.”
“Our role is to stand alongside designers as both creative and business partners,” said Satya Tiwari, president of Surya Inc., parent company to Global Views. “Hearing directly from leaders who are navigating these pressures every day helps strengthen the collective path forward.”
By highlighting tactics for adjusting to increasing costs while maintaining brand integrity and a creative vision, the discussion reinforced BOH’s mission to equip designers with the knowledge and tools they need to thrive in a rapidly evolving economy. Attendees left empowered with actionable tips and a clearer understanding of how to weather a complex business landscape.
