About our Company

The New York–based talent Matthew Fisher imbues sculptural stone objects with an anthropological slant. As a trained classical dancer he has channeled that profundity into a collection that represents a new frontier in the convergence of functional art and high design. Fisher
in turn, pays it forward by expanding the way the rest of us see and understand stone. In his hands, the cold, inert material transforms into a manifestation of divine force and a meditation on the passage of time “I’ve come to find that there are few materials which freely express their age, history and the story of their formation as stone does so effortlessly,” explains Fisher. The material’s presence in his life from his earliest memories helps to explain the grace and comfort with which he pulls forth form. “My father’s work as a geologist had my brothers and me trading playgrounds for quarries and sea cliffs on more than one occasion. Later in life as I trained as a dancer in New York City I lived amongst the travertine temples to the arts in Lincoln Center. In summer, I would lay on the stone benches of the now erased Paul Milstein Plaza to feel the earth’s material radiate heat into my core. As my life took a turn, stone became the material which shaped my understanding of ancient art and architecture. Its permanence allows for it to record events of history when all other material traces of a civilization have been lost to time.”

ABOUT THE ARTIST MATTHEW FISHER
When asked why he chooses to craft with stone his answer remains, “it is a part of who I am and continue to become. Stone was present as my identity formed, a peripheral comfort which has become so much more.” Fisher received his Master of Fine Arts from the renowned Pratt Institute. His work has been featured in T Magazine, Galerie, Surface, AD and various other publications. Matthew is represented in showrooms and galleries throughout the Unites States, Europe and Asia. Matthew lives and works in New York City.
