The design industry is teeming with competitions and contests as various companies call for entries for the best of everything from kitchen design to the re-imagination of an office space and a solution for improved urban housing. Below is a look at some ongoing contests into which you may want to throw your hat.
The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) is running a competition to select a design team for the new offices at 76 Portland Place, which will be converted to provide high-quality office space for all of the RIBA's London-based staff. The aspiration is that the building be exemplary in its design and as environmentally sustainable as possible. The competition is open to all current RIBA Chartered Practices and the winners will be expected to manage the project and coordinate other members of the required design disciplines through to completion. The deadline for registration is October 28.
Silestone kitchen design
Silestone is presenting its second annual program recognizing independent kitchen designers who celebrate the influence of color and push the envelope of design possibilities. A panel of high-profile design experts will judge and select three winning projects that feature Silestone natural quartz in a kitchen that not only reflects dynamic design, but also showcases a true passion for color. The grand-prize winner will receive an all-expense paid six-day trip to Spain and $1,500. The contest is open through November 15.
The Steel Institute of New York and the Ornamental Metal Institute of New York are partnering with Metropolis magazine to create The Living Cities Design Competition to challenge architects and engineers to develop an original design for modern, urban residential living that makes use of structural steel framing systems and energy efficient curtain wall enclosures. The competition is looking for innovative design solutions in the form of a high-rise residential tower framed in structural steel between 30 and 40 stories in height, and enclosed in a curtain wall-type assembly fabricated from glass, metal, or ceramic material that maximizes day-lighting while incorporating elements that temper heat loss/gain. This is a materials-specific challenge to address the needs of a growing population and changing workforce, considering factors influencing energy consumption, and sited in New York City and the five boroughs. The Steel and Ornamental Metal Institutes of New York will award one grand prize of $10,000 and an invitation to a half-day conference highlighting finalists' entries on February 12, 2014, in New York City. The winner and five runners-up will be published in Metropolis magazine and/or on its website, and in Metals in Construction magazine. The entry deadline is January 3, 2014.
New Practices New York is a biennial juried portfolio competition sponsored by the AIA New York Chapter, which identifies firms with unique and innovative strategies in both projects and practices. Architecture and design firms founded since 2004 and located within the five boroughs of New York City are encouraged to submit a practice narrative and a mini-portfolio of built, un-built, or theoretical work. The winner will receive recognition with the New Practices New York award, a stipend for an installation and exhibition at the Center for Architecture, media exposure through media sponsor The Architects Newspaper, the opportunity to participate in promotional symposia and lectures, a one-year membership in the AIA New York Chapter and access to the AIA New York Chapter’s New Practices Committee. The fee is $150 fee and the deadline to enter is January 6, 2014.
The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) has launched its Student Design Competition, Shelter, supporting the needs of a community in crisis. It challenges design students to demonstrate design excellence on the basis of humanitarianism, research, innovation, sustainability and universal design and presentation. The design competition runs through midnight EST on January 12, 2014, and calls for insightful and creative interior design solutions for converting existing, vacant buildings into temporary shelters that address and support the health, safety, and welfare of a community impacted by natural disaster and economic hardship. The winning entry will receive a $2,000 cash prize and will be highlighted at the ASID@NeoCon booth during NeoCon 2014 and featured in ICON magazine.
2012 Interior Design Education Video Competition winner
The Council for Interior Design Accreditation has announced the Interior Design Education Video Competition in partnership with the Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC), the NCIDQ Examination, the International Interior Design Association (IIDA), and Interiors and Sources magazine. The competition is open to interior design students, interior design educators, and interior design practitioners. This year's video theme is "How does interior design education intersect with the practice of interior design?” Click here for video parameters. The deadline is February 1, 2014.
