The two-day event is a partnership between Savannah College of Art and Design and the American Society of Furniture Designers, and the country’s only university-sponsored furniture industry conference. It takes place May 11–12, at SCAD in Savannah, GA.
“This unique meeting-of-the-minds will bring together industry professionals with student designers to share ideas and discuss the future of furniture design,” said Tom Gattis, chair of SCAD’s furniture design department. “The expertise and insight of the professionals combined with the unbridled imagination of the students is bound to create a fascinating dialogue.”
Some of the experts expected to attend include Charlie Bell, industry veteran and current president of Teknion Studio Group; Tom Hardy, independent design strategist and former corporate manager of the IBM Design Program; Jay Reardon, longtime president of high-end producer Hickory Chair; and Steve Hodges, ASFD president.
Professional workshops on topics such as the digital design process, prototype and production with tech-based machines, branding, sustainability and the future of the industry will be lead by SCAD professors and industry experts.
SCAD Furniture Design offers a distinctive education in furniture design, focusing on the design of furniture and accessories in close relationship with the reality of market needs. It offers one of the most comprehensive academic furniture design facilities in the nation. It is the only academic member of the Sustainable Furnishings Council and, in April 2009, was the only international design program to be honored with the “Young & Design” award during the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan.
