Even though Radiant Orchid is the Pantone Color of the Year, it’s not the only game in town. Other colors are making their mark for the coming year from Stiffkey Blue to Gold and Charcoal. Here’s a look at what’s coming down the pipeline from Farrow & Ball, Brentano, Behr, Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore.

Clockwise from top: Cooking Apple Green, Stiffkey Blue, Mole's Breath and Purbeck Stone

The colors designers will want to use in homes over the next year reflect “our instinctive need to turn our backs on the hard flat surfaces which dominate modern life,” according to Farrow & Ball. Cooking Apple Green, Stiffkey Blue, Purbeck Stone and Mole’s Breath, bring people back in touch with nature and are the key colors of 2014—gathered from either the seashore or the landscape.

Breath of Fresh Air

Benjamin Moore’s Color of the Year for 2014 is “Breath of Fresh Air,” a pale blue that is part of its Color Trends 2014 palette. Benjamin Moore’s Color Trend palette includes 23 colors that stand on their own but also work well in harmony, including light pinks and pale yellows as well as dark browns and greens.

Exclusive Plum, a sophisticated violet, is Sherwin-Williams Color of the Year for 2014. According to the paint company, the hue is a balance of cool blue and feisty red with a splash of gray. “This dusky, filtered violet is refined without being stuffy, elegant yet easy, and layered with romantic potential,” said Jackie Jordan, director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams.

“Every year we see new, exciting colors emerge—like the Seafern and Coral we’re forecasting for 2014,” said Brentano design director Iris Wang. “These emerging colors typically aren’t prevalent on the market yet, but they show signs of popularity.” Other colors that have captured the attention of the Brentano Design Studio for 2014 are Linen, Sapphire, Gold and Charcoal.

From top, down: Seaside Harmony, Urban Alternative, Grand Reign, Natural Avocation

Lavish jewels and architecture of the 1920s were an inspiration to Behr Paints’ collection of 20 new paint colors and 2014 color trends, which include Seaside Harmony, an open look of modern resort chic, where the colors of sun, surf and sand come together in a relaxing mix; Urban Alternative, the natural evolution of industrial modern décor into something that feels more modest, relaxed and attainable; Grand Reign, an invitation to distinctive opulence and romantic glamour; and Natural Avocation, a spotlight to your hobby, adding a sophisticated touch to your home and a rich experience in the exploration of color.
