With 55 participating showrooms, the New York Design Center's annual market event "What's New, What's Next?" taking place September 20 features hundreds of new product introductions, informative lectures and book signings with some of the industry's top names in celebration of its 85th anniversary.

As designers and editors tour the showrooms, they will asked to help identify the trends that are “new” and “next” in design, and share what is inspiring you. Either chat with an onsite video camera located in the Access to Design office, or post photos to Facebook and Twitter or direct email accesstodesign@nydc.com to announce your favorite features from the day. Your comments will be incorporated into the Editor at Large video of “What’s New, What’s Next @ 200 Lex” and will be included in posts on the new NYDC.com and Editoratlarge.com.

3:00pm Benjamin Moore, Suite 714: Color, Color, Color! It’s the one topic we can never get enough of. Join House Beautiful’s Editor-in-Chief Newell Turner in the Benjamin Moore showroom to find out why.

3:15pm 1stdibs@NYDC, 10th Floor: Join the Museum of the City of New York curators Donald Albrecht, curator of architecture and design, and Phyllis Magidson, curator of costume and textiles, for a discussion of “Cecil Beaton and the 1930s: A Preview,” an exclusive sneak peek of the highly anticipated exhibition opening at the MCNY on October 25. The pop-up exhibition features photography, vintage fashions, textiles and furniture of the 1930s, which was captured by Cecil Beaton in his iconic photographs. A highlight of this presentation is furniture from 1stdibs@NYDC.

3:15 - 5:15pm Kasthall, Suite 611: House, Home, Heart: Artistry and Craftsmanship in the Architecture of Shope Reno Wharton by Bernard Wharton; Foreward by Paul Goldberger Book Signing Innovative, memorable, and timeless structures are what the architecture firm Shope Reno Wharton does best. They look at their projects from an artistic point of view and believe that houses should be aesthetic, contextual, as well as functional. 4:00pm Kravet, Suite 401: Inside the Designer's Studio: Up Close and Personal with Windsor Smith. Join Pamela Jaccarino, Editor-in-Chief of Luxe Interiors + Design magazine as she explores the inspiration that fuels famed West Coast designer Windsor Smith. This exclusive interview with Windsor will offer guests special insight into her career, her life and personal style. Wendy Goodman, Design Editor of New York Magazine, will moderate a panel on the rapid changes taking place in the furniture and furnishings market and how designers and manufacturers are finding new and creative ways to respond. Panelists will include Jeff Behnke/Altura Furniture, Kevin Kolanowski/ Fuse Lighting, Michael McEwen/McEwen Lighting, Patrick McDarrah/emma gardner design, and furniture designer Rick Rubin/Harris Rubin.

4:45 - 9:00pm In House Kitchen Bath Home, Suite 100: Traditional Home, Sub-Zero and Wolf invite you to dine on delicious food prepared by Chef Coleman Teitelbaum and participate in cooking demonstrations throughout the day at In House Kitchen Bath Home. 4:45 - 5:15pm Ted Boerner, Suite 515: Lesley Anton: From Inspiration to Reality. Los Angeles based ceramic artist Lesley Anton cites how inspirations ranging from the rocks of Joshua Tree, Death Valley sand dunes, her grandmother’s milk-glass hobnail bottles, and a simple trip to the Korean grocery store has helped her develop her organic modern lighting collection, represented at Ted Boerner at the NYDC.

5:00pm Atelier, Suite 202: Precision: Making Choices for Your Style in Your Space: NEW YORK SPACES Editor-in-Chief Jason Kontos has continuously captured the innovative designs of the Metro area’s most influential designers in the pages of each issue. 5:15pm Profiles, Suite 1211: Re What’s Under Your Shade? A lighthearted look “under the hood” with artisanal lighting designer Marian Jamieson. The best-made lamp has recognizable attributes that determine quality. What should you look for Jamieson is known for her meticulous craftsmanship, attention to detail, and finishing. She’ll discuss what’s visible and what you’ll never see (but should ask about!) Using her newest table and floor lamps as examples. What’s the difference between a good shade and a dud? 5:15pm Metropolitan Lighting Fixture Co., Suite 512: Studio Bel Vetro (Studio of Beautiful Glass). Paulo Delima and Lisa Spinella will talk about the mission and aesthetics of Studio Bel Vetro, and their custom glass lighting fixtures. They will be presenting images of the work and the process of making some of their signature pieces from concept to completion. They will discuss the broad range of customization possibilities, and how this benefits designers who are looking for the perfect design solutions for their clients.

6:15 - 8:15pm Wood & Hogan, Suite 812: Classic forms as a springboard to What’s Next. Tradition continues to be the muse for “what’s next”. Erudite scholarship confirms that good design stems from basic principles defined by Vitruvius in his text on architecture. Join award winning architect Peter Pennoyer as he discusses examples from his book Peter Pennoyer Architects as well as the collaborative effort between Pennoyer and the Museum of the City of New York in the current exhibit, “Colonial Revival in the Modern Metropolis”. Donald Albrecht, curator of architecture and design for MCNY and independent curator and architectural historian, Thomas Mellins join us in discussion of the design decisions necessary to create the context for the exhibit and accompanying book American Style, co-authored by Albrecht and Mellins. 6:30pm Century, Suite 616: VERANDA Presents Century Icons. Century Furniture and VERANDA Editor-in-Chief Dara Caponigro for a celebration of icons in design. View a showcase of designer vignettes featuring the work of past Century iconic designers – Oscar de la Renta, Richard Frinier and Juan Montoya – and toast Century’s new partnership with Charlotte Moss for a Spring 2012 collection. The showcase will be accompanied by an intimate conversation with the designers, revisiting their Century collections and the personal icons that inspire them.

7:00pm Niermann Weeks, Suite 905: Hariri & Hariri Architecture Book Signing. Gisue Hariri of the New York firm, Hariri & Hariri - Architecture, the dynamic team of Iranian-born New York based sisters, will be signing copies of their recent monograph: Hariri & Hariri – Buildings & Projects and will share her experiences designing the many high-profile international and visionary achievements in the areas of urban, residential, commercial, cultural, hospitality and product design as well as art objects.

7:15pm Cliff Young Ltd., Suite 505: Designing Furniture: A Discussion about the Complex Process behind the Glamorous Art of Furniture Design. Bomboozled is a sharply written book that delves into America’s family fallout shelter fascination and obsession stemming from Governmental propaganda in a post- Cold War era. Families were led to believe that building expensive fallout shelters would protect them in the case of a nuclear attack and Susan Roy has uncovered the absurdity of this notion.
