The Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) will be studying, preserving and exhibiting video games as a part of its current Architecture and Design collections beginning March 2013.

Fourteen games were selected as outstanding examples of interaction design, a field that MoMA has already explored and collected extensively, and one of the most important and often discussed expressions of contemporary design creativity.

The Sims

The initial collection includes: Pac-Man, Tetris, Another World, Myst, SimCity, vib-ribbon, The Sims, Katamari, Damacy, EVE Online, Dwarf Fortress, Portal, flow, Passage and Canabalt.

Criteria for the selections emphasize the visual quality and aesthetic experience of each game, as well as elegance of the code and the design of the player’s behavior.

MoMA hopes to acquire about 40 video games in the near future to complete the exhibition and highlight the art of design.
