Why Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams is hiring an outside CEO

Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams is on the hunt for a CEO. The Taylorsville, North Carolina–based home furnishings company is expanding, and, on the eve of its 30th anniversary, is seeking a new leader. “We recognized we needed to add to our senior executive bench strength and [I] decided [I] would like to have someone on the team that could really take over most of the day-to-day decision making,” says Mitchell Gold, chairman and CEO, who co-founded the company with Bob Williams, president of design, in 1989.

Gold, who will continue in his role as chairman following the new hire, says the team’s ideal candidate is “someone who has a style sense/taste level in sync with Mitchell and Bob; proven experience and expertise with the financials of building a retail business; proven experience and expertise in building a retail chain of prestige stores—does not have to be home furnishings but would be helpful—and someone who fits into our nurturing culture.”

That company culture includes perks like its not-for-profit, education-based daycare center, a health-focused, reduced-cost on-site cafe, health fairs, and college scholarships for children of employees. The Stephens Group, a family-owned investment firm based in Little Rock, Arkansas, has backed Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams since 2014.

“With our 30th anniversary approaching, 33 retail stores, close to a million square feet of manufacturing and distribution, a robust contract, office supply and other retail store businesses, we thought this would be a good time,” says Gold.

The global executive search and leadership advisory firm Spencer Stuart has been hired to run the search.
