The 2nd Annual State of Design is a fundraising event that supports the future of the interior design profession and celebrates students. Organized by Metropolis magazine and Education Legacy Fund (ELF), it will be an evening of open, constructive dialogue about what shapes twenty-first century design and how designers respond to our evolving culture. ELF and ASID's NY Chapter created the platform and award to honor Metropolis Publisher Horace Havemeyer III's  accomplishments and ongoing dedication to the design community.

In the face of the new economic and environmental realities, design is playing an increasingly important role in an emerging global community. Experience no longer trumps ideas, and success is now being fueled by intergenerational, interdisciplinary concepts and communication.

The State of Design 2012 will feature a riveting interactive exchange between two Metropolis 2012 Game Changers who connect on the issues at hand, moderated by Metropolis editor in chief Susan S. Szenasy. The topic is Slow Down + Move Fast: The speed & skills of 2 very different generations — the boomers & Gen Z — challenge designers to understand the new demographic reality.

The event features Ruth Finkelstein, ScD, Vice President for Health Policy, The New York Academy of Medicine and Katie Salen, founder of Quest to Learn and Professor of Games and Digital Media at DePaul University. The event takes place Wednesday, March 28 at 6:00pm at 4 Columbus Circle in New York City. Tickets may be purchased online and are $45 per person and $15 for students.
