American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) CEO Randy Fiser presented some very good news for interior designers at the Society’s first annual State of the Industry Address last month at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.
One of the key takeaway points was the fact that while other sectors in the building industry have continued to struggle post-recession, interior design has been experiencing a rebound.
Performance has been positive for the past 10 months, led largely by residential remodeling and the commercial sector, while hospitality and retail have shown improvement.
Fiser did not forget to mention how design has changed since the hard-hitting recession. “Overall, this industry growth has come with some costs,” said Fiser. “Firms have downsized, designers are doing more with less and often for a lot less."
According to Fiser, this is the “new normal” for interior design and it will continue to change but also continue to grow. “Current forecasts indicate that growth will continue into the first half of next year,” said Fiser.
The presentation included data from the ASID State of the Industry report, which provides an overview of design industry economic figures, including its size, scope and impact on business productivity, healthcare, education and legislation.
