Twenty-two top designers will pull up—and pull off—a chair for charity at the Take a Seat exhibit and charity auction. Hosted by the New York Chapter of the International Furnishings and Design Association (IFDA NY), along with media sponsor New York Cottages and Gardens magazine (NYC&G), the event will benefit Habitat for Humanity.

Vivian Chiu's chairs become progressively smaller.

The designers will either reimagine an existing chair or create one from the ground up to be auctioned off at a gala fundraiser on Wednesday, May 27, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Safavieh Home, located at 902 Broadway, New York. Their creations will take the stage at ICFF from May 16 to 19 at Booth 3033 and will then be displayed in the windows and showroom of Safavieh Home up until the auction gala on May 27. Interior designer Michael Tavano, star of the BBC television series "House of the Year," will serve as master of ceremonies at the gala, leading the bidding with two professional auctioneers.

Some of the notable names include interior designer Vanessa DeLeone, as seen on HGTV’s "Generation Renovation" and "Bang for Your Buck" as well as NBC’s "America Dream Builders"; Iris Dankner, Holiday House NYC founder and principal at ID Creations; John Loecke, partner at Madcap Cottage interior design services and retail shop; Karim Rashid, industrial and interior designer whose award-winning designs include luxury goods for Christofle, Veuve Clicquot and Umbra, with interiors such as the Morimoto restaurant in Philadelphia and the Semiramus Hotel in Athens; and Tamara Stephenson, interior designer and author of leading lifestyle blog Nest by Tamara, as well as Lani Adeoye, Michael Arguello, Allison Bassen, Carly Bassen, Jonathan Bressler, Jerry Caldari, Cliff Young, Gregory Allan Cramer, Nancy Fire, Sarah Fox Tracy, Stacy Garcia, Barry Goralnick, Lorraine Gordon, John Loecke, Jenifer Mack, Kelly Mittleman and Susan Young.

"After launching IFDA's Take a Seat charity event three years ago, we are ecstatic to have gained so much momentum for this event! From the high-caliber participating designers to the tremendous exposure at ICFF and the valuable support from event patrons NYC&G and Safavieh Home, we anticipate a record-breaking donation to Habitat for Humanity NYC," said Andrea Brodfuehrer, IFDA NY chapter president.

Last year's collection of Take a Seat for Charity chairs

The Take a Seat for Charity event isn’t limited to New York City. This year’s event, which runs from May 13 to June 3, features Japan, New York, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Arizona, Florida, Minnesota, Northern California and New England contributors. Each participating community's members redesign ordinary chairs to be displayed at a free local exhibition before appearing in an auction, which will raise funds for the chapter and for a charity selected by the chapter. The New England chapter, which is participating for the first time, will exhibit artwork chairs produced by local architects, builders, craftsmen, designers and students in a traveling exhibit in the greater Boston area, with proceeds benefiting the Women’s Institute of Housing and Economic Development.
