The Design Council in partnership with New Designers has launched a pilot program, the Future Pioneers, that will champion young designers with a vision for a better future.

Future Pioneers aims to raise awareness of the positive impact design can have. The scheme will create a platform for designers with the potential to contribute to economic growth and solve social problems in inspiring and exciting new ways.

Working together with the annual New Designers exhibition, which plays host to over 3,000 design graduates, the Design Council will be searching for between three and six of the most principled, passionate and purposeful new designers exhibiting at the Business Design Center in London, July 3 -6.

As part of its involvement with New Designers, the Design Council will be hosting the New Designers’ Thursday Late event on July 4 at the Business Design Center. The Future Pioneers finalists will be announced during the event and will be rewarded with a program of promotion, mentoring and support which will include an exhibition at 100% Design in September 2013.

The Design Council will be joined in its search by a range of top designers and design experts who are leaders in this space. The judges include Bethan Gray, award winning furniture designer; Mat Hunter, chief design cfficer, Design Council; Will Knight, 100% Design; Angus Montgomery, Design Week; Jane Ní Dhulchaointigh, Sugru; Jay Osgerby, Barber Osgerby; and Tom Tobia, social design.

Olympic Torch designer Osberby commented, "It is vitally important to nurture the next generation of creative minds. I am delighted to be working with the Design Council to help them find the 'Future Pioneers' of 2013."

Designer Bethan Gray commented, “New Designers was instrumental at the start of my career, and joining the panel gives me a great opportunity to give back. I am passionate about supporting emerging talent. Embarking on a career as a young designer presents as many challenges as opportunities. Future Pioneers provides both immediate exposure and the ongoing support to help overcome those challenges and maximize the potential of opportunities that arise."

Chief design officer at the Design Council Mat Hunter commented, “Every new generation of designers changes our idea of what design can do. We want to celebrate those that show us where design should go next, inspiring better ways for us to live.”

The Design Council’s mission is to bring the transformative power of design to the things that matter. As an enterprising charity, their work places design at the heart of creating value by stimulating innovation in business and public services, improving the built environment and tackling complex social issues. They inspire new design thinking, encourage public debate and inform government policy to improve everyday life and help meet tomorrow’s challenges today.
