Danish expansion: Carl Hansen acquires P.J Furniture
By Staff

Expanding on its dominance of the Danish furniture business, Carl Hansen & Son has just acquired P.J. Furniture. In addition to Rud.Rasmussen, the Danish company founded in 1869 and taken under the Hansen umbrella in 2011, this now gives the Carl Hansen, which dates from 1908, a portfolio that includes designs by Ole Wanscher.

“P.J. Furniture will be gradually integrated into the Carl Hansen & Son Group and will help strengthen our brand. We feel certain the products will have no trouble taking their rightful place among our other world-class designers and high-end furniture classics. Ole Wanscher’s collection comprises excellent products and our expectations are very high. In this regard, we have both the obligation and the opportunity to manufacture and market some of the finest Danish furniture on the international market,” says Knud Erik Hansen, CEO of Carl Hansen & Son.

This Colonial Chair was originally designed by Wanscher in 1949, during a period of fascination with the design of 18th century English furniture. The chair went into production in the mid-1950s and has remained in the production since. With the Carl Hansen American presence, the Colonial Chair is just one Danish design that will become widely available in the U.S.
