The winter edition of the The Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair is returning to London’s Battersea Park January 19 to 24, and in the spotlight is a collection of chairs. The exhibit, “Take a Seat: Three Hundred Years of Chair Design,” will reveal the evolution of seating styles through the 1700s and 1800s, with a focus on arts and crafts, modernist, Memphis Group and architect-specific styles (including chairs from Carlo Bugatti, Charlotte Perriand, Niko Kralj, Philippe Starck and Philip Arctander).
Each of the chairs is up for sale and is shown by the fair’s exhibitors. Some of the highlights include jointed and high-back designs from the 17th and 18th centuries; country stick-back chairs from Wales, the West Country and Windsor; and Georgian pieces by master cabinetmakers in Sheraton, Chippendale and Regency designs. Other notable chairs and styles will include 18th- and 19th-century European salon chairs with painted finishes and postmodernist styles such as the 1980s Italian Memphis Group.
