ASID to host events for emerging interior designers
By Staff

Divided into four categories: PROject, PROduct, PRO Bono Work, and PROfessional Advancement, GO PRO: NYC enables new designers to participate in networking, social and educational events and gain exposure to diverse industry perspectives.

The two-day series of events September 16 and 17 is tailored specifically for emerging professionals in the interior design industry, and is organized by the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID).

The program kicks off on September 16 with a tour of the New York Times Building by FXFOWLE Architects—an environmentally sustainable 52-story, 1.5 million-square-foot tower. Attendees will listen to a brief presentation and embark on a tour through the celebrated building. A reception will follow in the spectacular 42nd floor offices of Covington & Burling that feature 360 degree panoramic views of Manhattan. Tour will be lead by Guy Geier, Managing Partner of FXFOWLE Architects.

Famed carpet designer, most well-known for working with Nepalese weavers and creating innovative maps of New York, Joe Carini of CariniLang shares his journey from his exquisite showroom, followed by a panel discussion on the responsibility of the design community to take an activist stance and embrace pro bono work. John Cary, author of The Power of Pro Bono, will discuss his experiences in this area and a case study will be explored on the Harlem-based Girls Educational and Mentoring Services (GEMS) facility—an organization to empower young women who have been sexually exploited.

Panelists include Sonya Dufner, FASID, Associate Principal, Director of Workplace at Perkins + Will NYC; Rachel Lloyd, Founder and Executive Director of New York-based Girls Educational and Mentoring Services (GEMS); and Courtney E. Martin, author of "DO IT ANYWAY: the New Generation of Activists".

At the PROfessional Advancement event at Vitra, young designers are invited to mingle with design professionals by practice area and expand their professional network in the sectors they want to pursue. GO PRO: NYC will close with food, libations and dancing.

The costs each day are $35 for ASID members and $45 for non members for September 16 and $50 ASID member / $60 Non-member for September 17. For information or to register click here.
