Business of Home is the home industry’s leading business media brand, delivering essential news, analysis and insights to interior designers and industry professionals.

Established in 2009 by shelter magazine alum Julia Noran Johnston, Business of Home is an independent news organization founded on the belief that the design trade deserves high-quality journalism. Since then, it has become the daily media of record for the entrepreneurs, executives and creatives who work in the $4 trillion home sector. 

Today, Business of Home’s editorial initiatives include a robust daily news site, daily and weekly newsletters, the quarterly print magazine BOH, two podcasts that explore the challenges facing the industry, and biannual guides to the industry trade show High Point Market. In addition, the company offers a broad range of business resources, including the industry’s largest job board and events calendar, a hub for product debuts, a series of bimonthly business workshops, a directory of industry experts and skilled trades, photography and video production services, and a membership community offering exclusive access to experts, editors and events. 

Business of Home also hosts an annual conference, Future of Home, which fosters forward-thinking conversation among industry leaders, innovators and entrepreneurs about the forces of change sweeping the design world.

Julia Noran Johnston founded Business of Home in 2009, and has made it the go-to source for insight and analysis on business trends for interior design professionals and anyone working in the home industry. She has covered home and interior design for nearly 20 years, starting out at magazines Architectural Digest and then Veranda. She is on the Board of Directors for the Sustainable Furnishings Council and the Decorative Furnishings Association (DFA), and is a member of the Design Leadership Network and the Decorators Club. She lives New York City with her husband and two children.

Kaitlin Petersen is the editor in chief of Business of Home. She is also the author of the site’s 50 States Project, a weekly series that chronicles the unique challenges of running a design firm through interviews with interior designers state by state, and host of the podcast Trade Tales. Kaitlin has been writing about style and design for a decade, and her work has appeared in Elle Decor, House Beautiful, Metropolitan Home and Veranda, as well as Chicago, Texas Monthly, Time Out New York, and the international editions of Vanity Fair and Vogue.

Fred Nicolaus has been covering the world of interior design and high-end home renovation for over a decade. In addition to Business of Home, his work has appeared in The Franklin Report, House Beautiful and Elle Decor. In a past life, Fred was a songwriter and musician—he toured internationally, released several albums, and his songs have been featured in film and television, including Gossip Girl, Blue Valentine, Man Seeking Woman and Wanderlust. A maximalist at heart, she believes that every object should have some sort of function in a home—even if it’s just to be beautiful and interesting.

She directed, produced and anchored for the school’s nightly television broadcast Annenberg TV News and wrote for Annenberg Media’s Spanish-language desk Dímelo. Dennis Scully is the host of The Business of Home Podcast, where he explores the changes and challenges facing the interior design community through interviews with industry thought leaders, entrepreneurs and creatives. He was previously a business development consultant for major trade brands, and has held sales and marketing roles at Domino, Waterworks and most recently Castel. He is also the host of the Dialogues on Design series for the New York School of Interior Design.

Her editorial clientele includes Elle Decor, Delish, Good Housekeeping, House Beautiful, InStyle, Metropolitan Home and Veranda. While intrigued by the beach aesthetic of the West Coast, she's currently based in brownstone Brooklyn, where she lives with many inappropriate shoes.

A graduate of Boston College, Kim joined the sales team at Veranda magazine in 2010 and immediately fell in love with the beautiful world of home furnishings. She then shifted to the product side, first with Maya Romanoff in the D&D Building, and then to Fort Street Studio where she served as Showroom & Marketing Associate, before joining Business of Home in 2018. A native of Greenwich, CT, she currently lives in New York City with her husband.
