What’s the inspiration behind the new collection?
Curios is a discovery collection from Sanderson. The team looked to designs collected from wondrous places, bringing together a beautiful blend of global influences alongside iconic and quintessential botanical prints in fabrics, weaves and wallpapers. It is a modern take on the English decorating style, captured in a fresh and exciting collection that suits relaxed yet joy-filled interiors.
What was the starting point for this collection?
Thoughts of steamer trunks filled with layers of pattern and print, plus masterfully crafted textiles from far-flung places. Of course, we turned to our archive for inspiration, drawing on unique and globally inspired designs. Safar is a new pattern inspired by an African Baule cloth in the archive. Musafir, referencing another archive document, is an ikat warp-printed mark alternating with a large stripe translated into fabric and wallpaper.
What about the collection feels fresh and exciting?
The refreshed and directional palette brings spices, jewels, florals, earthenware and natural dyes discovered on the Silk Road to life. With a thoughtfully colorful palette, decorative prints and inspired exotic textiles, Curios reveals an eclectic tale that feels fresh yet resonant.
What piece are you most excited to unveil?
There are so many designs that make Curios distinct in its offering, but Safar is exquisite. The ikat warp has been printed with embroidery added. Contributing to its unique nature, the yarns are screen-printed before being woven into the weft and then embroidered, creating a wonderfully detailed design where the intricate yarn-dyeing technique comes through beautifully.
Dabu is another design rooted in tradition but effortlessly translated to today. The name comes from the traditional textile art form original to Rajasthan, India, that combines block printing, mud resist and natural dyes. Inspired by this craft, small-scale stylized floral motifs have been surface-printed for a hand-block mark with a lovely chalky ground. A matching weave is available too.
How do you feel this collection pushes the brand forward?
Curios captures the spirit of Sanderson and our love of that eclectic decorating story. It celebrates the global inspiration that has inspired our portfolio since 1860, when Arthur Sanderson first started importing papers from across the world. It also honors the craftsmanship that lives in our historic archive, but with an interpretation that feels fresh and applicable today.
How does the collection build on or complement your other offerings?
Curios harmoniously weaves the beauty of botanicals, flora and fauna with innovative new stripe qualities, honoring the craftsmanship of traditional ikats and woven textiles. Infused with uplifting colors, it exudes joy and reflects the beauty to be discovered in exploration, offering a modern decorating story with our iconic patterns. Celebrating layers of history and provenance, Curios brings together fabrics mastered and crafted over time, each design deeply connected to its origins.
How do you envision designers using this collection?
Curios feels like the ultimate collector’s collection, with a beautiful range of designs created and curated to be layered together in existing schemes. It’s always a thrill to see how designers will interpret this—particularly with other pieces from the Sanderson portfolio—to style uniquely composed interiors.
