Few New Yorkers will forget October 29 when Hurricane Sandy pummeled the East Coast with damaging winds, rain and flooding, leaving tri-state area residents without power, heat, and in some cases, without a home to return to. The design industry has stepped up to the plate to help those affected through a variety of fundraising efforts. Here’s a look at who’s doing what and how you can help.

Crate & Barrel has pledged a minimum of $1.5 million over the next three years to Rebuilding Together, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to rebuild the homes and lives of America's homeowners in need. Throughout the partnership, Crate & Barrel and Rebuilding Together will join forces to support—with both financial contributions and volunteers—nation "build" projects that will provide critical repairs, accessibility modifications and energy-efficient upgrades for low- income homeowners and community centers at no cost to recipients.

The Center for Architecture has put together a fundraiser and discussion to key in on the issues of re-building and re-designing the city, keeping the issue of climate change in mind. On Nov. 7, Housing Works hosted its annual event Fashions for Action and donated 20% of all ticket proceeds to assist people living with HIV/AIDS who were displaced or are struggling to recover from the damage in Staten Island and the Far Rockaways, Queens.

From Nov.  9-11, Madeline Weinrib hosted a sample sale in its New York showroom and donated 10% of its profits to the American Red Cross for the relief effort.
