This season, designers and showrooms are giving their time, talent and money to a number of charity organizations to promulgate good design and good will. Below is a roundup of projects and designers helping to make the world a better place.

Phase II Ronald McDonald House of Long Island room design by Jennifer Cohler Mason

Phase II of “Project Design” at the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island was completed earlier this month, where more than $4 million in design, labor and materials was donated to complete the makeover of more than 50 rooms. The effort began through a partnership with Kravet and NYC&G (New York Cottages & Gardens) last summer, in which 20 interior designers were invited to make over rooms and common spaces for children suffering from terminal illnesses and their families.

Online consignment site Viyet will donate any unsold products directly to Housing Works, an organization that addresses homelessness and assists those suffering with HIV/AIDS.

Star Apartments in Los Angeles

The newly completed Star Apartments in Los Angeles will provide permanent supportive housing so that people who have experienced homelessness, prolonged extreme poverty, poor health, disabilities, mental illness and/or addiction can lead safe, stable lives in wellness. Created by architect Michael Maltzan, the 95,000 sf mixed use, multi-level residential project is reportedly on target for Gold LEED certification with factory fabrication ensuring compliance with energy savings.

Dwell with Dignity project

Through its program “Under 1 Roof,” Dwell with Dignity and Katherine D Interiors have created a home for a homeless family—a mother, her two-year-old daughter and four-year-old niece. Arteriors, Benjamin Moore and Peacock Alley donated product to the cause.

Hansgrohe SE, the sanitation specialist from Germany, has provided practical help to people in the Balkans, a region that experienced the worst flooding this summer since weather recording began, taking dozens of lives and leaving entire towns in Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia uninhabitable. Mud and rubbish have been cleared from the streets and reconstruction measures for destroyed buildings have begun. During the last few weeks, 1,000 bathroom mixers were delivered to the crisis area where they were distributed to the affected private households by aid organizations, such as the Red Cross and central coordination bodies.

The Ohio Design Centre is set to host its annual tablescape showcase, Entertaining by Design, November 6-8 to benefit the North Union Farmers Market (NUFM). The themed dining and entertaining tablescapes created by more than 30 of Cleveland’s leading interior designers will be displayed throughout the ODC’s eight immense showrooms and common areas. Each table is an over-the-top visual masterpiece, providing inspirations for holiday and year-round entertaining. Tickets to the VIP celebration and preview are $100 and available through the NUFM at (216) 751-7656. Throughout the weekend, tickets are $10 at the door. Proceeds will benefit NUFM, which aids in environmental, economic and health benefits for Ohio residents by connecting certified producers with consumers through a network of markets.

CTC&G staff volunteering at The Open Door

CTC&G (Connecticut Cottages & Gardens) celebrated its 10th anniversary with The Open Door kitchen and food pantry in Norwalk, Connecticut. The CTC&G staff helped with renovating the kitchen, which will serve more than 180,000 meals this year. In lieu of a party, CTC&G decided it would be a better use of its funds to donate to the worthy cause.

For its second collaboration with the non-for-profit organization goods for good (GFG), KnollTextiles will be producing bracelets using Ultrasuede fabric decorated with Swarovski crystals for the Bracelets for Good Project. All sales proceeds from the bracelets will benefit GFG, which helps develop sustainable community enterprises in Malawi.
