To accompany its Sea Worthy-themed show, the San Francisco Fall Antiques Show (SFFAS) will present Romance of the Sea, a six-part lecture series to accompany the 31st edition of the West Coast's oldest continuously operating international antiques show. The theme of this year’s show was inspired by the iconic America's Cup, which will be hosted in San Francisco in October 2013. The show, which runs from October 25-28, will feature decorative and fine arts relating to the ocean, boating, and travel. San Francisco resident, Olympic gold medalist skier and avid sailor Jonny Moseley serves as Honorary Chair. The lecture series will explore a range of treasures with renowned experts in their fields, including:

Thursday, October 25, 11am.  An Auction Adventure on the High Seas with Gary Metzner, Senior Vice President and Fine Art Director, Sotheby’s, Chicago

The long history of art and the sea encompasses nautical- and travel-themed works that expand beyond well-known marine paintings.  From the Dutch Golden Age of maritime painting through the Romantic period and Impressionism until the present day, artists as diverse as Gustave Courbet and Roy Lichtenstein have depicted great sailing vessels, enthralling boat races, and grand seascapes.

Thursday, October 25, 2:30 pm. “Who’s the Grandest of Them All?”: The Great Modern Ocean Liners with Marianne Lamonaca, Associate Director, Curatorial Affairs and Education, The Wolfsonian-Florida International University, Miami

In the 1920s and 1930s, the luxury transatlantic ocean liners married the era’s high-style Art Moderne design with cutting-edge technology. Extremely competitive transportation companies such as the Cunard White Star Line (Queen Mary), French Line (Normandie), Italian Line (Rex), and the North German Lloyd (Bremen) attracted passengers by creating environments and experiences that catered to their needs, desires, and fantasies. Marianne Lamonaca, curator of many exhibitions on Art Deco, travel, and related topics, will illustrate these extravagant, fashionable, and novel “floating palaces.”

Friday, October 26, 11am. Tales from the Haute Seas with Dennita Sewell, Curator of Fashion Design, Phoenix Museum of Art, Phoenix

Join curator Sewell on the high seas of style as she tells tales of garments worn on, in, and next to the water over the centuries.  Examples will span from 19th-century seaside dress to contemporary works by designers Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel, Christian Lacroix, and Miuccia Prada, as well as accessories and jewelry by Judith Leiber and Seaman Schepps. Sharing research from her most recent costume exhibition, The Sea, she will illustrate the allure of water, boating, and the undersea world and the enduring nautical influence on fashion design.

Friday, October 26, 2:30 pm. Celebrating Great Rooms: 300 Years of Changing Interiors with Lady Henrietta Spencer-Churchill, Interior Designer and Author, England

A noted authority on period homes and historical styles, Lady Henrietta Spencer-Churchill will speak about architectural elements, layouts, and design of interiors, from medieval times to present day.  She will trace industrial and social advances that have led to the evolution of room function and décor.  Her presentation will feature a stunning selection of illustrations from her new book, The Life of the House: How Rooms Evolve (Rizzoli, 2012), among them Blenheim, her family’s estate in England; Marble House in Newport, Rhode Island, where her great-grandmother Consuelo Vanderbilt spent much of her childhood; and homes she has worked on as a designer. Book-signing reception to follow.

DESIGNER SATURDAY, OCTOBER 27. In collaboration with The Northern California Chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art and the San Francisco Design Center.

Saturday, October 27, 11am.  Book-signing to follow. The Colorful Life of Rose Cumming with Jeffrey Simpson, Author and Former Contributing Writer and Editor for Architectural Digest, New York

Design legend Rose Cumming (1887-1968) helped to establish interior design as a profession between the 1920s and the 1960s. Jeffrey Simpson, author of new book on Rose Cumming: Design Inspiration (Rizzoli 2012), will describe how this flamboyant and talented character opened a shop on Madison Avenue and from there mentored, bullied, and taught many influential tastemakers, among them Albert Hadley, Bunny Williams, Mario Buatta, and Thomas Britt. Stories of her clients and renderings of her vivid color schemes will illustrate one of her famous dicta: “I have no time for boring colors, boring rooms—or boring people.” Book-signing to follow.

Saturday, October 27, 2:30 pm. Panel Discussion: Icons of San Francisco Architecture and Design, Featuring Ann Getty, Interior Designer, and Andrew Skurman, Architect, San Francisco. Moderated by Suzanne Tucker, Interior Designer and Designers Circle Chair

In celebration of each of their first monographs - Contemporary Classical: The Architecture of Andrew Skurman (Princeton Architectural Press, 2012) and Ann Getty: Interior Style (written by Diane Dorrans Saeks, Rizzoli, 2012) - acclaimed architect Andrew Skurman and influential interior designer Ann Getty will share images and ideas from their iconic work in the Bay Area and beyond. Skurman will illustrate how classical architecture has inspired his residential designs and detail how he has adapted French chateaux, Mediterranean villas, and Georgian country houses to suit contemporary lifestyles.  Focusing on her interior design philosophy, Getty, in conversation with Maria Quiros, Senior Designer at Ann Getty & Associates, will discuss how she mixes and merges different periods, styles, and cultures to create a sumptuous environment and illuminate how to live both elegantly and comfortably with art and antiques. Skurman, Getty and, Saeks will be signing books following the program.

The lecture series is sponsored by Sotheby's, HEWN and Sue Fisher King.
