The Pacific Design Center (PDC) will shine the spotlight on some of the industry’s leading design pros and up-and-coming talent with the annual Stars of Design and Stars on the Rise Awards, to be held at the design center in Los Angeles on Wednesday, March 20.

Here is a look at this year's winners:

Interior Design: James Radin

In his more than 30 years of professional experience, Radin began his career on the commercial end of the business in San Francisco at Gensler working alongside of Orlando Diaz-Azcuy. He then moved to New York after accepting a position with Swanke Hayden Connell Architects. After several years with the firm, James switched his design focus to residential and began working with Angelo Donghia and later at the office of Thierry Despont. Moving to Los Angeles, Radin opened his own firm and continues to focus primarily on residential work. While here he has also had the opportunity to design several film sets including the blockbuster hits Something’s Gotta Give, The Holiday and It’s Complicated.

Architecture: Andy Cohen and Rob Jernigan of Gensler

Cohen is a champion of design excellence at Gensler, and a mentor to the design leadership of the practices and offices. As an executive director, he oversees initiatives related to design, client development and strategic growth. He’s also a regional managing principal for the Southwest, with oversight of the offices in Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Newport Beach, Phoenix, San Diego and Seoul, South Korea. In this leadership role, he’s collaborated on The Ritz-Carlton Hotel & Residences at L.A. LIVE, LAX Airport, DreamWorks Studios, Sony Studios, MGM MIRAGE’s CityCenter and Farmers Field. Andy has helped build Gensler’s airport, entertainment, hospitality, mixed-use and sports practices. An architect, he is a graduate of Pratt Institute and fellow of the American Institute of Architects.

Jernigan is a managing principal for Gensler's Southwest Region, directing offices in Los Angeles, San Diego, Newport Beach, Phoenix, Las Vegas and Denver. Known to peers and clients as an accomplished architect, practice leader and collaborator, he is committed to design innovation, technical quality and a belief that we are only as good as the people we mentor to succeed us. Rob's technical expertise spans more than 32 million square feet of architectural and interiors projects that have reshaped city landscapes around the globe. In Los Angeles, his work includes the 55-story Hotel & Residences tower at L.A. LIVE, the renovation of the iconic AT&T Center tower, Century City's 2000 Avenue of the Stars and The Broad Museum now under construction. Rob is a member of the American Institute of Architects and the Urban Land Institute, and he serves on the boards of the Design Build Institute of America's Southern California Chapter and the Los Angeles Business Council. The AIA California Council (AIACC) recently awarded Rob its Presidential Citation for changing the face of architecture in Los Angeles. A strong proponent of community service, he has shepherded Gensler's gServe program, which encompasses the firm's community outreach activities and socially conscious design efforts.

Graphic Design: Sean Adams and Noreen Morioka of Adams Morioka

A partner at AdamsMorioka in Beverly Hills, Adams has been recognized by every major competition and publication including: Step, Communication Arts, Graphis AIGA, the Type Directors Club, the British Art Director’s Club, and the New York Art Director’s Club. Adams is president ex officio, past national board member of AIGA, president ex officio of AIGA Los Angeles, fellow of the Aspen Design Conference, AIGA fellow, teaches at Art Center College of Design, and is the co-author of Logo Design Workbook, Color Design Workbook, and the series, Masters of Design.

Morioka is a co-founder of AdamsMorioka, leading the team in client interface, and business development. Her creative input has led to the success of multiple communications programs. She believes that personal involvement with a client helps her crack the brand’s spirit and this allows her to interpret her clients’ sometimes vaguely articulated goals into actionable plans. In 2006, Morioka was named as a fellow of the American Institute of Graphic Arts. She is a past president of Los Angeles Chapter of AIGA, chair of the AIGA National President’s Council, Fellow of the International Design Conference at Aspen, and a board member of the James Beard Foundation.

AdamsMorioka has had a solo exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and they have each been cited as one of the 40 most important people shaping design internationally in the ID40. The firm’s clients include the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Adobe, Gap, Frank Gehry Partners, Nickelodeon, Sundance, Target, USC and The Walt Disney Company.

Urban Design: Jay Griffith

The firm of Griffith & Cletta is well respected in Venice where Griffith’s home and studio are just on blocks apart. Over the years, he has made valuable contributions to improve the Venice community, such as helping to found, sponsor, landscape and fundraise more than $1 million for the Las Doradas Children Center. With combined schooling that draws from UCLA, Art Center & the Instituto Allende in Mexico, the firm has a vast art historical and multicultural perspective. The designs reflect a desire to remove the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces. The desire is cultivated by the climate and lifestyle of California. As a lover of the California countryside, the firm often use native plants in the garden designs. One of the concerns is creating climatically correct gardens. Another trademark of the firms style is site-specific designs, recycling on-site materials, and blending form and function to create original and dramatic designs.

Art: Kenny Scharf

Scharf was born 1958 in Los Angeles, CA and currently lives there today. He graduated in 1980 with a B.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts in New York, NY. His objective: "My ambition as a professional artist is to maintain the course that I set nearly 20 years ago by establishing my work in the fields of painting, sculpture, and performance. Every project I undertake is building on my past experiences. My original approach is unchanged; it is a personal challenge to produce the best work possible every time. One very important and guiding principle to my work is to reach out beyond the elitist boundaries of fine art and connect to popular culture through my art. My personal ambition has always been to live the example. I believe the artist has a social responsibility to engage others in a thought process that ultimately brings art into everyday life thereby enhancing the quality of our experience."

Photography: Tim Griffith

Griffith has been photographing architecture and design-related images for more than 25 years. Melbourne born and working from bases in San Francisco and Singapore, he travels extensively on assignments in Asia, Europe and North America for a number of the world's leading design firms. His inventive and graphic images are widely published in a diverse range of international design journals, housed in several private and public collections and sought after by architectural, corporate and advertising clients around the world.

Each year, the PDC also recognizes some of the up-and-coming talent in the industry with the Stars on the Rise Awards. Here's a look at the three winners:

Bonesteel Trout Hall: Heidi Bonesteel, Michele Trout and Jill Hall (Interior Design Firm)

Heidi Bonesteel is full of surprises. She’s up for any adventure and embraces the unexpected in her life and in her design projects. She believes that a space should be as unique and fun as the people who occupy it and strives to bring that kind of authentic creativity to her clients. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara and later received her Interior and Environment Design Certificate at UCLA. She apprenticed for a residential interior design firm which exposed her to some of the most exciting residential projects at the time. She joined Hannah Gordon Design, a high-end residential design firm in 1994 and later became partner. Bonesteel partnered with Michele and Jill to form Bonesteel Trout Hall in 2004.

Michele Trout began to develop her design sensibilities during the year she spent living in Europe after completing her Bachelor of Arts at Pepperdine University. She embraced the tradition and beauty that permeated everything around her, but missed the casual elegance of her native California. Her desire to combine those elements grew as she pursued her Interior and Environmental Design Certificate at UCLA. While at UCLA, Michele worked for hospitality design firms such as Wilson & Associates and James Northcutt Associates. She worked at Barry Design Associates for six years, leaving as a senior designer. She joined Hannah Gordon Design in 2002 and partnered with Heidi and Jill to form Bonesteel Trout Hall in 2004.

Down to her core, Jill Hall is a competitive athlete. She is tenacious, determined and exactly the person you want in your corner if you like things done well and on schedule. Jill received her bachelor degree from UCLA and began her career in the marketing department of a high-end residential homebuilder. She then joined her family’s custom home business where she managed all aspects of finance and client relations. In 1993, she joined and managed Hannah Gordon Design. Her business background offers her clients a level of detail and follow-through that ensures painlessly successful interior projects.

Oliver M. Furth (Interior Design)

Furth is a native of Los Angeles and a fourth-generation Californian. He has had design in his heart from a very young age. He entered the industry at 15, working in an architectural office after school. At the time, Oliver was attending the prestigious Crossroads School for the Arts. He went on to study Industrial Design, at Art Center College in Pasadena; then Architecture and Art History, at The University of Colorado. In 1999, Oliver joined the Decorative Arts department at Christies Auction house, and later worked under an array of notable designers, architects and tastemakers, on both coasts, before opening his own firm in 2005.

Azadeh Shladovsky (Furniture and Interior Design)

Founder of eponymous multidisciplinary, Shladovsky has emerged as a designer best known for her artful, empathetic interiors. With architectural styles ranging from traditional to contemporary, and lifestyles that vary from casual to refined, what defines Shladovsky’s aesthetic is the ability to distill the elements of a space and create depth in the way interiors are experienced. Unlike many formulaic designers, Shladovsky’s design philosophy is ever evolving. Her inquisitive perspective is grounded in a rich and diverse life experience, a multicultural upbringing and travel experiences that have made Shladovsky an observer of the world, appreciating details that are commonly overlooked. Translating the details into “meaningful moments and experiences,” as Shladovsky says, is the intention of every project she undertakes. As a designer without creative limitations, Shladovsky’s projects encompass residential, commercial and retail environments, as well as furniture design.

The annual dinner is hosted by Charles S. Cohen, president and owner of the PDC, and takes place on Wednesday night at the famous Red Seven restaurant with cuisine by Chef Wolfgang Puck. This event is private, by invitation only.
