The Museum of Art and Design will soon host “Wendell Castle Remastered,” the first exhibition to reveal the digitally crafted works of the American art furniture movement master. As a designer, sculptor, educator and furniture maker, Wendell Castle began working in 1958. His techniques include handcraftsmanship, such as carving, rasping and finishing, blended with digital skills like 3-D scanning, 3-D modeling and computer-controlled milling. Wendell's innovative technique of stack lamination, in which he creates forms out of thick boards of wood prior to carving them, will be showcased, as well as 15 new digitally created works on exhibit.
"Wendell Castle's incorporation of new digital technologies into his individual practice has allowed him to dramatically expand his creative productivity yet remain quintessentially Wendell Castle. It is his constant innovation that remains at the heart of his enduring longevity in the field," said MAD's senior curator Ronald T. Labaco. "In the early 1960s, Castle brought a sculptural approach to furniture making through stack lamination. Today, more than 50 years later, he has returned to these roots but with the assistance of a CNC milling machine in the form of a robot named Mr. Chips. These extraordinary new works, never before possible, traverse the boundary between sculpture and furniture."
