The Center for Architecture will kick off Archtober tonight with “Authenticity and Innovation,” an exhibit curated by Donald Albrecht that focuses on adaptive reuse and preservation projects not overseen by New York’s Landmarks Preservation Commission. The month of October, New York’s design and architecture month, will see the return of the Building of the Day feature, which explores area architecture each day, as well as a calendar full of exhibits, activities, gallery openings and tours.

Albrecht writes that the 28 preservation projects appearing in tonight’s exhibit “represent the dynamic fusion of new and old that is the core of what is authentically New York.” Among the works explored are a forgotten trolley terminal, adapted into an underground park, and a diner that has been transformed into a community event space. Speakers will include Carol Loewenson of AIANY; Justin Davidson, architecture critic at New York magazine; Susan Szenasy, publisher and editor chief of Metropolis magazine; and a number of others representing top architecture schools and organizations.
