This year’s Masterpiece London, the annual art, antique and design show, closed last week, having spotlighted 5,000-plus years of art history for its collector attendees. Running June 30 through July 6, the show, which opened following the U.K.’s controversial Brexit vote, presented exhibitions, such as one celebrating the work of Zaha Hadid, curated by Francis Sultana, and Axel Vervoordt’s juxtaposition of ancient Roman and Egyptian work against modern art and design.
Design highlights from the show included London gallery Based Upon’s presentation of a commissioned desk. Other galleries included 88 Gallery, David Gill, Linley, Peter Petrou, Dutko Gallery, Anne Autegarden, Galerie Marcilhac, Modernity, Geoffrey Diner Gallery and Willy Huybrechts, as well as Rose Uniacke, which presented furniture, lighting and art hailing from the 19th century to present day.
Sales included “Untitled (Superficie)” by Enrico Castellani for €700,000 (about $773,000), sold to a European private collection; two large sculptural works, which were sold for £65,000 ($84,000) by Based Upon; and a 1920s longcase clock by Jens Jacob Bregno, sold for £100,000 ($130,000) to an anonymous Scandinavian collector.
The next show will be held at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, South Grounds, from June 28 through July 5, 2017.
