Newport Design Week 2026 Announces Theme: “250 Years of Cross Currents in American Design”

Newport, Rhode Island — Newport Design Week returns in summer 2026 with an ambitious and timely theme, “250 Years of Cross Currents in American Design,” offering a dynamic exploration of the global influences that have shaped American design from the Colonial era to the present day.

Founded in 2024, Newport Design Week has quickly established itself as a premier annual symposium celebrating both historic and contemporary design across the disciplines of fine and decorative arts, architecture, and landscape. Set within the storied backdrop of Newport’s architectural, design and trade legacy, the event brings together leading voices and enthusiasts for a week of insight, dialogue, and inspiration.

Following its inaugural focus on Newport as a cradle of design and 2025’s examination of British influences on American style, the 2026 program expands the lens to a broader international perspective. This year’s theme highlights the rich exchange of ideas between America and the wider world, tracing how European, Asian, and global design traditions have influenced American aesthetics—and how American design, in turn, has left its mark internationally.

A distinguished lineup of experts in architecture, furniture, interior design, textiles, silver, and landscape architecture will lead lectures and discussions. Attendees can expect a compelling journey through centuries of artistic exchange, paired with opportunities for meaningful engagement during evening social and networking events.

Events will take place in some of Newport’s most iconic historic venues, including Ochre Court, Newport Art Museum’s Cushing Gallery, and Rough Point, the former home of Doris Duke. These landmark settings provide an immersive environment that reflects the very design heritage the program seeks to explore.

The week concludes on Friday evening in conjunction with the opening reception of the Newport Antiques Show, offering a fitting finale that bridges scholarship and connoisseurship.

Newport Design Week 2026 promises a rich blend of history, innovation, and design excellence—making it an essential event for designers, historians, collectors, and anyone passionate about the evolution of American design.
