Late last month, Karen Daroff, principal of Daroff Design Inc + DDI Architects, was awarded the Leader of Innovation medal by Philadelphia University’s School of Architecture and Interior Design.

President Stephen Spinelli Jr. presented the medal to Daroff, who was recognized for her commitment to design excellence, including achievements in corporate headquarter, aviation, institutional and museum design.

As part of the weekend-long gala celebration, Daroff was invited to tour the campus and meet with Spinelli, along with faculty and students of the interior design department.

“I have had the pleasure and privilege of working with the talented faculty and students of Philadelphia University's architecture and interior design programs for many years—as a guest critic, lecturer and as an employer of their graduates,” said Daroff. “During my visit, I was invigorated by our discussions, by the excitement and energy of the bright, eager students, and the passion and commitment of the gifted faculty. As a neighbor of the university, and the head of the largest women-owned architectural and interior design firm in Philadelphia, I clearly recognize the important role that Philadelphia University plays within the Philadelphia design community. “

The benefit gala attracted nearly 500 industry partners, alumni, influencers and University supporters, while the Annual Fashion Show attracted more than 2,000 audience members. Proceeds from the events are used to support motivated students requiring financial assistance to complete their studies.

Some of the year’s most distinguished student work was on display including the best examples of innovative thinking in design, engineering, commerce, and other areas of achievement at Philadelphia University.

Daroff was recognized alongside fellow noteworthy Philadelphians: William A. Finn (Asten Johnson), Estefano Isaias (Pacific Cable Television), Christopher K. McHugh (Turner Investment Partners), and The Honorable Ed Rendell (Former Governor of Pennsylvania and Mayor of Philadelphia).

“The University draws candidates from a global market and brings the best of the best to Philadelphia,” said Daroff. “I have seen firsthand how the University professionally prepares some of the most creative and technically skilled students. Four alumni of the University have joined the team directly out of school and have grown to be strong assets to DDI."
