The Fall design calendar is bursting with inspiring design events from coast to coast—and New York's Decoration and Design Building (DDB) is the hub of much of the action.
Culminating the close of the first day of DDB Fall Market will be the fifth-annual Stars of Design awards ceremony and black-tie dinner. Charles S. Cohen, President of Cohen Brothers Realty, will host one hundred of the design industry’s elite for an intimate black tie dinner and ceremony celebrating the 2011 honorees Wednesday, October 12.
This year’s recipients have been selected by a panel comprised of industry leaders who are experts in the fields of art, home furnishings, architecture and design. Recipients include Albert Hadley for the Lifetime Achievement Award, Diller Scofidio + Renfro for Architecture, Jean Michel Othoniel for Art, Paula Scher, Pentagram for Graphic Design, Tucker Viemeister, Rockwell Group for Industrial/Product Design, Matthew Patrick Smyth for Interior Design, James Corner, Field Operations for Landscape Design + Architecture, and Jason Schmidt for Photography.
This distinguished panel of judges and jury include past year’s recipients: Michele Oka Doner, Peter Marino, Lee Mindel, Ivan Chermayeff, Scott Frances, David Easton, Massimo Vignalli, Ellie Cullman, and Robert A.M. Stern.
Fall Market begins the following day, featuring new showrooms debuts, product introductions, and inspiring keynote presentations. In addition, 15 top design bloggers will be fluttering about market, reporting on their favorite finds, while taking momentary rest stops in the lounge co-sponsored by Editor at Large, Andrew Martin and Go Design Go. Kicking off the day at 9:30 a.m., Margaret Russell, Editor in Chief, Architectural Digest will present The Power of Reinvention as the Keynote presentaiton. Russell will discuss the evolution of an iconic brand, how to meet the demands of an ever-changing market, and how to find the balance between reinvention and relevance. Bob Appelbaum, president of Clarence House, will host a brunch reception immediately following the keynote presentation in the Clarence House, Suite 205.
From 11:00 to 11:45 a.m. at Robert Allen|Beacon Hill, Suite 301, designers may participate in the Sherwin-Williams Colormix 2012, a CEU-accredited, elemental journey for interior designers presented by Jackie Jordan, Sherwin-Williams Director of Color Marketing & Design. Color is always on the move, and right now, it’s exploring its origins. Colormix 2012 surveys the landscape to find core palettes inspired by Mother Earth. A light lunch will follow. Martyn Lawrence Bullard, star of Bravo’s Million Dollar Decorators, and author of Live, Love Decorate by Rizzoli and Susan North, Senior Vice President of Design/Creative Director for Schumacher, host a conversation on how to land a licensed fabric collection and the process of developing it from concept to line launch. Moderated by Carolyn Sollis, contributing editor of Editor at Large. Following the presentation Schumacher will host a meet and greet with the panelists and a book signing for Bullard’s new book. From 12:00 to 12:45 p.m. Learn about how window treatments are an all too often overlooked opportunity for design in modern interiors in Creation Baumann, Suite 1522 . Noted window treatment designer Erik Bruce presents a glimpse into his process; a fresh, new approach to treating windows and dividing spaces in harmony with the architecture. Having served as the principal designer at Mary Bright Inc. for the past eight years, Erik is now creative director of his own studio. He continues to develop new inventive solutions for unique spaces, working closely with the architect and/or interior designer of every project. Lori Weitzner’s passion for her work is driven by what inspires her to create. Inspiration can be found in anything that offers stimulation to the senses, something as specific as a color palette taken from a single artifact or as extensive as a cultural time period. Her CEU-accredited presentation, in Pollock, Suite 1722, focuses on the artist's never-ending quest for new sources of inspiration. The presentation is conceptually stimulating and fresh and will concentrate on the process through which Weitzner goes to find inspiration in her work and give the listening audience practical tools with which to ensure their own success. Jennifer Boles' particular passion for interior design has inspired and animated her blog The Peak of Chic since 2006. In a free-wheeling and open discussion in Léron Inc., Suite 1521, she shares with us those things that have sparked the imaginations of successful designers of today and yesterday, from travel and architecture, to fashion, flowers and literature. Fine and Irving both have growing fabric collections. Hamilton has worked side by side with Peter Fasano for 25 years and is now introducing her first collection. All stylish, wordly and with a little bohemian-chic thrown in, each of these women have created collections that transcend a stylistic definition that encompasses feelings of romanticism which work seamlessly in both traditional and modern décors. From 1:00 to 1:45 p.m. join Patterson, Flynn & Martin in suite 632 along with acclaimed interior designer and author David Kleinberg, Pierre Durand, financier and owner of The Chinese Porcelain Company and Paul Johnson, Deputy Director of the Brooklyn Museum, for a conversation on the use of art and antiques in today’s interiors. Anne Maine, Editor in Chief, Traditional Home, will host the afternoon keynote Transcending Branding Boundaries. Her distinguished panel of design professionals will explore how to break out from traditional style branding models. Moderated by Publisher Beth Fuchs Brenner, the panel will discuss various ways design professionals need to think outside the box and transcend the ‘old school’ manner of doing business in favor of modern day tactics, including television, online media, brand licensing, innovative retail marketing, and more. Panel members include designer Jonathan Adler; lifestyle architect Windsor Smith, Christina Juarez, Publicist and Leading Consultant in the design industry; and Peter Sallick, Managing Partner of Design Investors, LLC.

Having trouble finding that perfect trim or tassel? From 2:00 to 2:45 p.m., Christian Fischbacher in suite 411 is proud to present the launch of Wendy Cushing Passementerie. Cushing is the international designer and maker of exclusive high-end tassels and trimmings. Her company is based in London where she produces unique custom trimmings in hand blown glass and Crystal. The collection includes stock trimmings that will now be available to the US market. She will be presenting the collection in person and welcomes the opportunity to meet designers. Refreshments will be served.
Alix Perrachon will moderate a panel of leading designers whose work is featured in her book, The Decorative Carpet, from Monacelli Press at the Marc Phillips showroom in suite 211 in the D&D Building. Designers Penny Drue Baird, Glenn Gissler and Bruce Bierman will speak about how designers use decorative carpets in their work and the current state of the market. There will be a visual presentation of each designer’s work, including images from the The Decorative Carpet.
Before you put pen to paper, learn the practical, legal and aesthetic factors that go into creating a branded collection in the Lewis Mittman showroom, suite 903. A panel of design and legal experts will share their expertise and answer your questions. Light refreshments will be served.
From 4:00 to 4:45 p.m. Jerry Pair introduces designer James Girouard of Textures in Wallcovering. James will be on site giving demonstrations and discussing the process and design behind his new, hand-crafted, refreshing and innovative line of wallcovering. Inspired by simplicity in design, James has always found that texture, as opposed to pattern, on walls creates the desired mood for the space, rather than the undesired focal point.
From 4:30-7:00 p.m. stop by Stark Carpet, Suite 1102, to listen to designer Nina Campbell whose list of clients and design expertise is unparalleled. Renowned for her contagious wit and brilliant sense of personal style, Campbell's designs appeal to both young and old and sit well in both contemporary and traditional interiors. Stark Carpet will offer insight into how Campbell integrates carpet, fabric, wallcovering and furniture in her interior design projects. Presentation will begin at 4:30 p.m. and be followed by a reception hosted by Architectural Digest.
From 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Zimmer + Rohde, Suite 932, celebrates Traditional Now. Michael Boodro, Editor in Chief of ELLE DECOR, will host a reception to celebrate David Kleinberg’s new book, Traditional Now. “Beauty meets quality of life” was the mantra Kleinberg adopted from his sixteen-year tenure at the venerable design firm Parish-Hadley, and guided his own firm, David Kleinberg Design Associates, in its rise to the top of the interior design hierarchy. In Traditional Now, he demonstrates the meaning of those words in more than twenty projects. Kleinberg’s body of work is wide-ranging in style yet always modern in sensibility; each residence is calibrated to its occupants’ needs and tastes. A curated mix of antiques, fabrics, textures, finishes, art, and objects is key to the striking rooms he develops. Kleinberg explains his approach in thoughtful commentary on each project, addressing larger questions of interior design—where do you start? how is the color palette determined? what is the furniture plan? how do you select antique pieces?—thoughtfully and informatively.

Bridget Collins, Designer Director for Marvic Textiles, presents Indigo Mood, their new Fall collection of stone-washed cotton block prints, stripes and solids inspired by 19th century print design and stripe documents from Alsace Lorraine in France. “This collection is designed to tap into a younger, more casual market,” says Ms. Collins. Indigo is one of the oldest and most widely used dyestuffs. Derived from the root of the indigo plant, its popular use in French printed fabrics of the 19th century rendered the most universal fabric, denim (or literally ‘de Nîmes’, from Nîmes in Provence). From Buckingham Palace to Claridges, Britain’s finest and most famous interiors have featured Marvic’s fine fabrics for nearly seventy-five years. The firm is renowned for its bespoke service and has developed original designs for many of the country’s most celebrated interior designers and historic houses. From 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., join as interior design pros Campion Platt and Eric Cohler air their views on such topics as how they design for the sexes, how they contemporize traditional spaces and what it's like working in an era of constraints and restraints in the Moura Starr showroom in suite 401. While Platt's design work is considered masculine, there is a sexy feminine side to his palette. Cohler has been dubbed the "Mixmaster" for combining contemporary materials with classical elements to give his interiors a jolt of unusual color and texture. One thing they have in common: They graduated from the Columbia University School of Architecture, Cohler with a Master's in Historic Preservation and Platt with a Master of Architecture degree.
