Emerging design will be a highlight of this year’s Collective Design fair, coming to New York May 4 to 8. The show will feature work by grad students in the 3D Design Department at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, as well as this year’s iteration of “Sight Unseen Offsite,” an exhibit that spotlights innovative and contemporary furniture design from the Americas.
“Collective Design is committed to presenting the most exciting design voices working today, through our galleries and collaborations with partners like Cranbrook and Sight Unseen,” said Steven Learner, Collective Design founder and creative director. “We provide a platform where a broad audience interested in design and art can experience this compelling new work in a unique setting.”
The Cranbrook exhibit, “Fine Design for the End of the World,” will spotlight designers’ takes on current issues and challenges, among them social and economic inequality, consumer culture and the environment. Cranbrook has long been considered one of the nation’s top design schools, with alums including Charles and Ray Eames, Jack Lenor Larsen, Florence Knoll, Vivian Beer, Jonathan Muecke and Christopher Schanck.
Online magazine Sight Unseen returns to the show with a contemporary furniture and lighting set designed in collaboration with Designtex. It will feature the work of five independent and emerging American design studios, set against custom wallpaper developed with Designtex for the show. Studios and designers included in the show are Only Love Is Real, Studio Proba, Bower, Chris Wolston, and Fort Makers.
