Thirty-one projects have won 2016 AIA New York Design Awards, all of them representative of AIA New York members and architects practicing in New York City. The four award categories are Architecture, Interiors, Projects, and Urban Design. The jury, which was made up of independent architects, educators, critics and planners from outside New York, agreed to not award a Best in Competition prize, because each project developed an idea for a particular challenge.

The projects, which were given either an Honor or Merit award, were selected for their “design quality, response to its context and community, program resolution, innovation, thoughtfulness and technique.” They were completed by AIANY members, architects or designers practicing in New York, or were New York projects designed by architects and designers based outside of the city.

“This year’s jury was drawn to projects that engaged the environment, were innovative and showed clarity of concept,” said AIANY 2016 president Carol Loewenson, FAIA. Additionally, she explained, “They celebrated the restoration of St. Patrick’s Cathedral and recommended that Preservation be its own category next year.”
