Business Manager – Key Responsibilities
The Business Manager plays a vital role in overseeing the financial and operational functions of the studio. This role is ideal for someone highly organized, detail-oriented, and proactive, with a strong background in finance and a passion for supporting business growth.
• Financial Management & Accounting
The Business Manager handles daily financial operations, including bookkeeping, reviewing expenses with the owner, and maintaining accurate records. Responsibilities include bi-weekly payroll, 401(k) disbursements, client invoicing, reconciling purchases, tracking retainers, and generating monthly financial statements. They also prepare sales tax reports and ensure billing aligns with project milestones.
This role collaborates with the external financial controller on forecasting and reporting, manages financial planning calendars, maintains cash flow spreadsheets, and assists in processing quarterly income tax payments with the owner.
• Operational & Administrative Support
The Business Manager manages lease agreements, office expenses, vendor payments, and insurance renewals (health, liability, worker’s comp, etc.). They work with the Executive Assistant to review and optimize recurring business expenses, such as software and insurance, and assist in purchasing and tracking project-related expenses.
• Human Resources & Compliance
This role supports HR functions by maintaining employee records, transit benefits, and insurance documentation. They update the employee handbook and ensure compliance with company policies. They also collaborate with leadership to support annual budgeting and ensure financial strategies align with team operations.
• Strategic & Business Growth
The Business Manager contributes to the studio’s long-term success by identifying ways to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and increase profitability. They provide financial insights to support decision-making.
Qualifications & Skills
• 3+ years of experience in business management, finance, or operations (preferably in interior design or a creative industry).
• Required to be on-site at least 3 days per week.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, highly organized, detail-oriented, collaborative and proactive.
• Tech-savvy with expertise in MS Office, G-Suite, financial and project management tools, and Enterprise Planning Software
such as Design Manager, Studio Designer, and NetSuite.
