Inspired by the aesthetic of the Arts and Crafts Movement, as well as containing considerable Japanese and Chinese influences, the Ellisfield Collection showcases designs from a wealth of different backgrounds.

BOH caught up with Lucy Vaughan, co-founder of London-based trade lighting, textile and furniture company Vaughan, to discuss the inspiration behind the brand’s latest introduction, the Ellisfield collection. 

What’s the inspiration behind the new collection?
Similar to the Chawton Collection, the inspiration stems from our mutual appreciation of fine craftsmanship, together with a shared love of organic materials and nature. It weaves in elements of the Aesthetic Movement from the 1870s and 1880s, with its emphasis on art for art’s sake, and the prioritizing of beauty. Japanese and Chinese influences lend a richness and sophistication to the pieces too.

What was the starting point for this collection?
It was an organic evolution from our Chawton Collection. Thanks in part to lockdown, our creativity is flourishing more than ever, and this collection is a satisfying embodiment of that.

What piece are you most excited to unveil?
The Colemore Chest of Drawers for its beautiful wood finish, elegantly tapered legs and fine brass handles. There is a depth in the detail of this piece, and it brings up a real sense of nostalgia: The original has been sitting outside our drawing room in London for the past 10 years and is a very familiar piece to us.

How do you feel this collection pushes the brand forward?
This collection both pushes the brand forward and honors our roots as antique dealers. In the 1980s, our antiques shop was full of furniture, and reintroducing it to the brand, alongside some new lighting pieces, feels like a natural progression. From a practical perspective, the addition of more furniture helps ground the lighting as well as provide pieces on which the lighting can sit.

What about the collection feels fresh and exciting? 
The Woodcott, Somborne and Linford tables feel particularly fresh, thanks to their striking ebonized bases. They feel contemporary and traditional at the same time due to the contrast of the two different wood finishes. When it comes to the lighting, the Ibthorpe lantern is a firm favorite, from the naturalistic leaves to the soft white finish.

Tell us about the materials in this collection.
Wood and brass are used predominantly throughout the collection, across both the lighting and furniture. They are such versatile materials, and can be applied with a multitude of different finishes, textures and veneers.

How do you envision designers using this collection?
In a mix of different spaces and contexts, paired alongside our existing lighting and textiles.  We’re really looking forward to seeing the innovative, creative ways designers use these pieces, and how they come to life and provide grounding for people’s homes.

Do you have any special memories of working on this?
Often it’s the viewing of the finished pieces that provides the most satisfaction—seeing all the hard work come to life is deeply rewarding. Each collection is different, and it’s been a joy watching this one come together and fine-tuning the details within each piece.
