Forty-five galleries will showcase painting, sculpture, bronzes, ceramics, jewelry, jade, textiles, prints and photographs from all over Asia from March 10 to 19 in New York. Among this year’s participants are cultural institutions Asia Society, China Institute, MoMA, The Met and The Noguchi Museum; auction houses Doyle, Christie’s, Sotheby’s, iGavel and Bonhams; and numerous dealers, including Prahlad Bubbar, Walter Arader Himalayan Art and Ralph M. Chait Galleries.
“Each year at this time, just as the flavor of spring arrives in the air, another phenomenon electrifies the atmosphere of New York: Asia Week,” says Lark Mason, chairman of Asia Week New York 2016 and owner and founder of iGavel Auctions. “And each year in-the-know aficionados look forward to this 10-day event with great expectation. And why shouldn’t they? Asia Week, now celebrating its seventh anniversary, is more exciting than ever.”
The exhibitions, which are organized by category and region, include modern pieces such as in “Kōgei: Contemporary Japanese Art” (at Dalva Brothers, 53 E. 77 St., March 10-19; and also at Onishi Gallery, 521 W. 26 St., March 1-19); Buddhist art, in “Sacred Images From Nine Centuries” (Buddhist Art at Arader Galleries, 29 E. 72 St.); and a wealth of work spanning dynasties at “Transitional Treasures and a Selection of Works from the Tang to Qing Dynasties” (Berwald Oriental Art, 3 E. 66 St., No. 8B).
