December’s can’t-miss design events

December’s roundup of industry events includes a few seasonal twists as some design destinations go festive for the holidays. Read on for BOH’s monthly calendar highlights, including conferences, trade shows, showhouses and design discussions.

Field + Supply’s Holiday Pop-Up
Kingston, New York | NowJanuary 9
Makers fair and e-commerce destination Field + Supply will host its first-ever holiday pop-up this year, offering a festive selection of handmade and finely crafted products from makers and designers in the Hudson Valley and beyond. The curated collection includes home decor, kitchen accessories, artisanal pantry staples and natural beauty products from more than 40 makers, including Thread & Whisk, DBO Home, Mathilde, Lithologie and more. World Architecture Festival
Virtual | December 1–3
The world’s largest annual international architecture event will be held digitally this year—complete with livestreamed keynote speeches, award ceremonies and breakout events—before returning to a hybrid format in 2022. The three-day conference includes talks by leading industry figures such as Hanna Harris, chief design officer for the City of Helsinki; Olson Kundig principal and co-owner Alan Maskin; and Louise Stewart, curator of exhibitions at Sir John Soane’s Museum. Design Miami
Virtual and Miami | December 1–5
Orchestrated for the first time by curatorial director Wava Carpenter, the 17th edition of Design Miami explores the theme “Human Kind,” focusing on design-centric solutions for a more “equitable and interconnected” future. Along with presentations from more than 50 galleries and 20 curio exhibitors, this year’s event features a number of talks centered on topics such as sustainability, diversity and equity, along with electrification, emerging technology and vegan design. Art Basel Miami Beach
Miami | December 2–4
Returning for an in-person event this year, more than 250 galleries from 36 countries and territories will display works during this annual art fair—including 40-plus first-time joiners, thanks to newly relaxed participation guidelines. Additionally, attendees can tune into Art Basel’s 10-part Conversations series, where artists, gallerists, curators and collectors will convene to discuss the art world’s most pressing topics. The Twelve Days of Christmas Holiday Art & Antiques Show
Virtual | December 5–16
Hosted by Incollect and curated by the Art & Antiques Dealers League of America, this holiday show returns for its second annual edition with wares from 32 different exhibitors, each offering one spectacular piece from their collections. From paintings and furniture to silver, porcelain, jewelry and more, this year’s selection will represent a wide range of dealers, including Hyde Park Antiques, Paul M. Hertzmann Inc. and European Decorative Arts Company. For more info, click here.

Deck the Halls with Southern Living
Virtual | December 9
Southern Living’s 2021 Idea House in Louisville, Kentucky, has been decked out in holiday decor ahead of the first-ever event broadcast from the location, during which viewers can tune in for cooking, entertaining and decorating ideas from the magazine’s editors and special guest experts. Hosted by Southern Living editor in chief Sid Evans and recipe developer Ivy Odom, the program will also feature Louisville chef Lucretia Thompson, wine expert and LEE (Let’s Empower Employment) Initiative co-founder Lindsey Ofcacek, and author and stylist Katie Jacobs. They’ll lead viewers through a series of cooking and cocktail demonstrations, gift-wrapping tips, and holiday decor how-tos such as making a front-door wreath and setting a festive Southern table.
