Home furnishings retailer Lillian August opened its first Manhattan location last week—a 17,000 square-foot space on West 20th Street. The space is split between the company's exclusive product line and its interior design business.

The two-level space includes home furnishings, accessories and gifts, custom furniture, window treatments, fabrics and, soon, rugs. President and CEO (and Lillian's son) Dan Weiss described it as a showroom, antique shop and design store in one.

In addition to its new location, Lillian August has three Connecticut stores, and a new space within H.D. Buttercup in Los Angeles.

The company was formed in 1987 by Lillian August, who is an artist, a painter, an interior designer, a textile designer and a furniture designer. She runs the company in the tradition of European design families—each family member is strongly individualistic and highly creative in different areas.
