Under the Same Sky: Virtual Pop-Up Shop
May 13 - June 13
Virtual Event
Following her brother's suicide in 2014, Chicago-based interior designer Amy Kartheiser founded Under the Same Sky, an organization working to open the conversation around suicide and fund efforts to bring healing and support to those affected by it. Under the Same Sky draws upon partnerships with both the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), through which it focuses support of AFSP’s Healing Conversations program for suicide survivors, and Amy’s design practice, Amy Kartheiser Design, which has created fundraising opportunities through design-based pop-up shops. Through these efforts, Under the Same Sky identifies and helps to close funding gaps for crucial survivor support and awareness programs, and continues to expand the ever-growing circle of trust, acceptance and support for those affected by suicide. Amy’s personal experience with the devastating impact of suicide has been a journey through pain, introspection and empathy — and, ultimately, a perspective-shifting move toward concrete action and creating change. In 2017, while on a plane to France to source furnishings and home accessories for her interior design clients, she had an epiphany: finds from her travels could translate into fundraisers that would help provide support for those affected by suicide. She envisioned a series of pop-up events featuring decor and other unique finds, with the proceeds going to AFSP. It's because of this success that Under the Same Sky became a reality and has continued to allow Amy to combine her love of globally-influenced design with her dedication to the wide-ranging community of those affected by suicide, ultimately creating an ongoing partnership with AFSP. And more importantly, meaningful change. Under the Same Sky provides a unique place for designers to source pieces for their own projects, as well as meaningful opportunities for the larger design community get involved in support of its mission.
