Housing Works’ Design on a Dime Charity Benefit, Groundbreaker Awards Dinner and public sales have raised a staggering $1.3 million for the nonprofit, increasing awareness about HIV/AIDS in the process. Designers, celebs and philanthropists celebrated at the third annual Groundbreaker Awards on April 22, where TV personality and Editor in Chief of Sandra Lee magazine Sandra Lee, President & CEO of New York Design Center James Druckman, interior designer Charlotte Moss and Sandra Stangle, president of Pottery Barn, Pottery Barn Kids and PB Teen, were honored. Druckman also received the inaugural ELLE DECOR Heart of Design Award.

The third annual Groundbreaker Awards event was held at the Altman Building in New York City.

Led by honorary chairs Lara Spencer and Nate Berkus, along with founding chair James Huniford and co-chairs Michael Boodro, George Oliphant, Evette Rios, and host Martha Hunt, the Design on a Dime opening night reception on April 23 revealed a first glimpse of an array of vignettes designed by 60 preeminent interior designers. The 1,600 attendees, including Miles Redd, Tyler Wisler, Patrick James Hamilton, Danielle Colding, Lorraine Bracco, Chris Benz and Andy Cohen, were also invited to shop au courant merchandise at discounts of up to 70 percent.

The $1.3 million raised by the events and the two-day public sales will benefit Housing Works’ new Hull Street Residence, a development for formerly homeless HIV-positive New Yorkers, which is being built from the ground up on a 6,000-square-foot lot in Brooklyn. “I support Housing Works because it never forgets the people that other people would rather forget,” said co-chair Michael Boodro, editor in chief of ELLE DECOR. “The organization has been pivotal in establishing the visibility of the importance of housing for people with HIV/AIDS. They have never hesitated to fight for the rights of the underdog.”
