D&D Building gears up for annual Spring Market

Timothy Corrigan, Aerin Lauder, Jamie Drake and Celerie Kemble are among the keynote speakers at the Decoration & Design Building’s Spring Market taking place Thursday, May 15. The daylong, building-wide event will feature presentations, showroom events, open houses and new product introductions. Designers will benefit from new business strategies, resources and opportunities to meet and mingle with peers.

2014 Spring Market keynote panelists

To kick off the day at 9:00 a.m., Kravet will host the first keynote presentation, “Creativity in Business” moderated by Hearst Design Group Editorial Director and House Beautiful Editor-in-Chief Newell Turner. He will give interior designers advice on how to successfully marry design talent and aptitude with lucrative and smart business decisions. Panelists include Aerin Lauder, Jonathan Adler and Calvin Klein Home Creative Director Amy Mellen.

The second keynote presentation, “Build for Success: Structuring Your Business to Thrive in Today’s Market,” will bring together Timothy Corrigan, Celerie Kemble and Vicente Wolf as they share their insights on mastering the challenges of growing your business in today’s marketplace. The discussion will be moderated by Creative Director for Schumacher and Patterson Flynn & Martin, Dara Caponigro, in the Schumacher showroom at 10:00 a.m.

Below are a few additional highlights from the day’s lineup:

11:00 a.m.

Robert Allen will host a unique discussion created and moderated by Barbara Viteri of Viteri Style Management. Designers Ashlina Kaposta of the Decorista and Michel Boyd of Smith Boyd Interiors will teach guests to “the art of the hustle” and design it to grow your business authentically.

12:00 p.m.

De le Cuona will host Toma Clark Haines, founder of The Antiques Diva & Co., Olga Granda-Scott, co-founder of The High Boy, and interior designers Philip Gorrivan and David Scott, for a conversation on the role of antiques in 21st century interiors. The panel will be moderated by Louis Navarrete.

Designers Jamie Drake and Gary McBournie and color expert Gillian Rose will take part in the discussion “Color Outside the Lines” at Stark. Moderated by design author Susana Salk, the discussion will focus on the power of color in decorating.

1:00 p.m.

In the Pollack | Weitzner showroom, ELLE DECOR will present a lively panel discussion that will uncover the psychology behind design. Karen Marx, Home Furnishings Director for Hearst Design Group will moderate the panel with Lori Weitzner, principal of Weitzner, Matthew Patrick Smyth, interior designer, Thomas Kligerman, architect and Gigi Grimstad, homeowner.

2:00 p.m.

Luxury brand Baroncelli will host a lecture and book signing with Susanna Salk, author of Decorate Fearlessly! Salk will lead a talk and visual tour of her favorite ‘fearless’ rooms from today’s top designers, which celebrate rule breaking design ideas, bold personal style and confident, accessible design.

JAB Anstoetz will host designers Louis Garcia, Jennifer Flanders and Michael Tavano as they create vignettes celebrating outdoor design. Blogger and designer Patrick J. Hamilton will guide guests through the designers’ inspiring concepts featuring the new JAB Anstoetz outdoor collection, Patio Pacific.

3:00 p.m.

In the Maya Romanoff showroom, Joyce Romanoff will present the book Multifarious: Maya Romanoff’s Grand Canvas. The new biography showcases the work of the man once known as Multifarious Maya, who burst onto the American design scene as a tie-dye wunderkind in the 1960s.

4:00 p.m.

Donghia Creative Director and Design Director of Studio Rubelli, Chuck Chewning will present the story of his impeccable restoration of the legendary Gritti Palace in Venice. Chewning will take guests through this spectacular and celebrated property, while detailing the design and restoration process. The Gritti has been timelessly refurbished, retaining its iconic history while contemporizing this majestic property for the 21st century.

5:00 p.m.

Guests are invited to join Lonny Market Editor, Cat Dash, and rising stars of interior design Sara Gilbane, Sam Allen, Paris Pickett of Drake Design Associates and Jennifer Beek and Georgie Hambright of J+G for a discussion on original style, taking risks and redefining luxury in 2014. The discussion titled “Five Under 30: A Whole New World,” takes place in the Lorin Marsh showroom.
