Over the course of a panel-, program- and keynote-packed two days, this year’s WESTWEEK market unfolded at the Pacific Design Center. Kicking off March 23 with a discussion moderated by House Beautiful editor in chief Sophie Donelson, the market hosted open houses, exhibitions, collection celebrations and plenty of receptions, all unified under this year’s theme, “Mad About Design.”

“This year’s WESTWEEK theme, ‘Mad About Design,’ emphasized the fearless, confident attitude that is the hallmark of great design and prolific talent, with a special focus on innovators both past and present, emerging and established,” said Jeff Sampson, vice president and director of marketing at the PDC.

Donelson’s panelists included New York–based designer Lindsey Coral Harper of LCH Interiors and Los Angeles–based designers Jeff Andrews of Jeff Andrews – Design and Molly Luetkemeyer of M. Design Interiors. (Check out Go Design Go’s top takeaways from the event.) The opening day’s second keynote, “To Live and Design in DTLA,” shared insights into how downtown Los Angeles has taken off as an international cultural hub and what that means for artists who’ve made it their home. This panel discussion was moderated by Carlo Caccavale, associate director of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Los Angeles Chapter and featured industry pros Erin and Ian Besler (Besler & Sons), Lawrence Azerrad (LAD Design), Loryn Napala and Monica Opaskar (Untitled Mondays), Spencer Nikosey (KILLSPENCER), and Danielle Rago, A+D Architecture and Design Museum’s COME IN! DTLA curator.

The PDC’s showrooms opened their doors to attendees, hosting special programming including A. Rudin’s “Layering History: Hybrid Design Today,” exploring the relationship between modern and traditional design with notables like editor Michael Wollaeger, architect Richard Landry and interior designer Stephen Sills; and Thomas Lavin’s discussion on contemporary art collecting, with Luxe Interiors + Design editor in chief Pamela Jaccarino in conversation with museum curator Rebecca Morse, art gallery owner Randy Sommer, art collector GT Dave, architect/designer James Magni and art adviser Michael Thomas; and a DEDON-hosted discussion with celebrated design duo Bob and Cortney Novogratz on the topic of designing a home as a boutique hotel.

In another keynote, Interiors editor in chief Erika Heet led a discussion with three revolutionary design professionals: product and furniture designer Eric Chang (Hellman-Chang), interior designer Cliff Fong (Matt Blacke Inc.) and architect Patrick Tighe (Tighe Architecture). The group spoke of the importance of forward-thinking ideas, how their diverse—and, in some cases, unexpected—career backgrounds have helped them succeed, and why L.A. is so inspiring. WESTWEEK concluded with Hollywood Reporter contributing editor Cathy Whitlock moderating panel on elevating client tastes, and the resulting impact on designers' own work.

As Sampson reflects, “Thanks to the top-notch programming, national media partnerships and A-list talent featured throughout two days of keynote programming and showroom presentations, PDC enjoyed to-capacity attendance at market [also] thanks to an enthusiastic response from the design community."
