How to protect your process from an indecisive client

A client who overthought every step of a project prompted designer Hema Persad to begin taking measures that covered her time.

There was no doubt in Hema Persad’s mind that she was dealing with an indecisive client. “One of the first things she said was, ‘I debated so long before reaching out to you,’” recalls the founder of Los Angeles–based Sagrada Studio. “They’re lawyers, both of them—and having been a lawyer myself, I immediately knew that decisions were analyzed heavily in this household. As they walked me through the house, she was like, ‘I have this empty space here. Maybe it could be a dining room, but a family member says that’s a bad idea.’ So, there were cooks in the kitchen that don’t live in the house—that’s red flag number two, and it only makes the indecisiveness worse.”
