The interior designer’s guide to New York Design Week
By Staff

Design is ubiquitous in New York City this week with the inaugural NYCxDESIGN, which includes over 200 events at venues throughout the city. Whether at home, at work, or somewhere in between, you’re likely to be within a stone’s throw from a New York Design Week event or exhibition. Think of it as the design industry’s answer to Fashion’s Night Out—but for 12 days—and Editor at Large has edited down the essential guide to interior design-related events and highlights to help you navigate the week.

Speaker Quinn of the New York City Council announces details of NYCxDESIGN on Friday

Running through Tuesday, May 21, NYCxDESIGN officially kicked off on Friday, and brings together culture, education, commerce and entertainment with a full, varied program including exhibitions, installations, design shows and exhibitions, talks, product launches and open houses. The week’s events span all disciplines of design, from graphic and product design to architecture and fashion, digital and urban design to furniture and interior design.

NYCxDESIGN is a collaboration among the City Council, Mayor’s Office, City agencies and a steering committee composed of some of the City’s most renowned design institutions, retailers, manufacturers, entrepreneurs, curators, educators, editors and, of course, designers.

From the beginning of his career in 1940 until its culmination in the late 1970s, Harry Bertoia was, fundamentally, a sculptor. The exhibition is free of charge but by appointment only. To schedule a visit, call 646-574-7464 or email.

The Gerald and Project Exhibition features more than 100 of the world’s most exciting and influential artists, illustrators and designers including Oliver Hibert, Tatiana Arocha, Insa, Stanley Chow, Kai and Sunny and Pete Fowler, who have taken a paper dog and made it their own as part of the two-year Gerald Project. Reclaim NYC invites guests to its second exhibit and charity sale, Reclaim x2: design that’s more than the sum of its parts. Reclaim NYC’s inaugural event in December was a reminder of the design community’s strength in NYC. In the spirit of continuing the feeling of teamwork and community generated by the first show, Reclaim NYC has called upon designers to pair up and create works inspired by the idea of collaboration. Participants like Lindsey Adelman, Egg Collective, Jonah Takagi, UM Project and VOLK, were encouraged to work with partners outside of their own firms or disciplines to address the idea of coming together in times of need. The resulting work will be sold to benefit local victims of Hurricane Sandy through the Brooklyn Recovery Fund. The sale takes place on Thursday, May 16 from 7:00 – 11:00 p.m. at 446 Broadway (3rd Floor). RSVP.
