London-based rug designer Luke Irwin has launched The Mosaic Rug Collection, available exclusively at ABC Carpet & Home, both online and in-store, as well as on the designer’s website. The collection draws its influence from Irwin’s discovery of a Roman mosaic tile buried just below the soil beneath his farmhouse and barn, and is handwoven in India from silk and wool.
The rug motifs, says the brand, “are inspired by natural imperfections of a ruin, re-created through an oxidization process. Yarn is eaten back to the warp and the weft to create the high-low timeworn effect on each rug, with random, imprecise carvings.”
“When you own these rugs, not only will you have something that is beautiful to look at, it should also be—if you have any form of inquisitiveness within you—something that you look at that will always make you think, hopefully on a bigger level, about our place in time and history, and all of these things that have gone before. It becomes a portal or a sort of potion to take you back 2,000 years,” says Irwin.
Graham Head, vice chairman of ABC Carpet & Home, says, “The Mosaic collection, comprised of unique, one-of-a-kind rugs, will be collector’s items. Each piece is special, inspired by a time past and handwoven in the most luxurious silk and wool. The collection represents an ode to the mosaic design for flooring, which predates rugs—creating a beautifully distressed-looking, timeworn piece.”
